Microsoft Lens is retired: it was removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026, and Lens stopped creating new scans after March 9, 2026. Microsoft recommends scanning with OneDrive, but OneDrive saves scans to its cloud storage rather than locally on your device. Microsoft has not said that AI caused Lens’s retirement, so “victim of AI” is a headline framing—not a confirmed explanation.
What happened to Microsoft Lens?
Microsoft’s retirement notice set out a phased end to the mobile scanner. The dates have all passed:

These dates and the current guidance are in Microsoft’s Retirement of Microsoft Lens support article. Store removal means you should not count on being able to download or reinstall the app from either named store.

Can you still access old Lens scans?
Microsoft says you may continue to open previous scans if Microsoft Lens remains installed on your device and you sign in with the account that was active most recently in the app. The notice does not promise that scans will be recoverable if Lens has been removed or if you cannot access that account.

If Lens is still installed and you can sign in, open it and check that the scans you need are accessible. Save or export important documents to a location you control while the app remains available; do not delete Lens on the assumption that you can reinstall it later.
How to scan with OneDrive
Microsoft recommends using the OneDrive mobile app for new scans. The documented steps are:

- Open the OneDrive app.
- Tap the plus button in the lower corner.
- Choose “Scan photo.”
- Capture the document and save the scan to a location in OneDrive.
The key workflow difference for people who used Lens to keep files on their phone is storage: Microsoft states, “OneDrive does not support saving scans locally on your device.” Scans made this way are saved in OneDrive, not as local device files.
Did AI cause Microsoft Lens to be retired?
That has not been established. Microsoft’s retirement notice gives the timeline and recommends OneDrive, but does not explain why the company made the decision. TechRadar’s August 11, 2025 headline framed the change as happening “in favor of more AI tools” and discussed Microsoft 365 Copilot as an alternative. That coverage is an interpretation, not evidence that Microsoft cited AI as its reason.

TechRadar reported that Microsoft had counted more than 92 million lifetime downloads. That is a figure attributed to Microsoft by TechRadar, not a count of users or active installations, and the underlying primary Microsoft publication was not independently verified here.

In its August 2025 report, TechRadar said the then-available Microsoft 365 Copilot scanner lacked direct saving to OneNote, Word, and PowerPoint; business-card scanning to OneNote; read-aloud; and Immersive Reader integration. Those are dated observations, not a current feature comparison. App capabilities can change, and this reporting does not establish whether those gaps remain today.

For readers choosing a replacement, the supported conclusions are narrower: Lens is no longer available for new scans, Microsoft points users to OneDrive, and OneDrive does not save scans locally. A current ranking of third-party scanners or a present-day feature-by-feature comparison is not established here.
