OpenAI announced GPT-5.1 Pro on November 19, 2025, as an update to GPT-5 Pro. The launch coincided with Google’s Gemini 3 announcement, but the available evidence does not show that OpenAI released the model specifically in response to Google or establish a head-to-head winner. GPT-5.1 models are no longer available in ChatGPT, according to OpenAI’s March 11, 2026 update.
What GPT-5.1 Pro was
GPT-5.1 Pro was an updated version of GPT-5 Pro, announced by OpenAI on November 19, 2025. At launch, OpenAI made it available to ChatGPT Pro users through the model picker. OpenAI also said GPT-5 Pro would remain as a legacy model for 90 days before retirement; that was the planned launch-period transition, not a statement of current availability. OpenAI’s release notes document the announcement and rollout.
What OpenAI said improved
OpenAI reported that, in early testing, users consistently preferred GPT-5.1 Pro to GPT-5 Pro, particularly for writing help, data science, and business questions. The company said testers highlighted “improved clarity, relevance, and structure in its responses.” These are OpenAI’s descriptions of early user feedback, not independently verified results: the cited release notes do not give a sample size, testing methodology, benchmark table, or quantified performance gain.
Why Gemini 3 was part of the launch conversation
Google announced Gemini 3 in November 2025 and described Gemini 3 Pro as a multimodal reasoning model. That timing put the two announcements in the same news cycle. It does not by itself show that GPT-5.1 Pro was launched to counter Google’s release.

Google reported Gemini 3 Pro scores of 81% on MMMU-Pro, 87.6% on Video-MMMU, and 45.1% on ARC-AGI-2 with code execution. These are Google-published figures for named benchmarks, not comparative results against GPT-5.1 Pro. Google’s Gemini 3 announcement provides that benchmark context.
Can you say which model was better?
No—not from the cited figures. A reliable comparison would require aligned tasks, model versions, tool access, settings, and test dates. The available sources do not provide a controlled GPT-5.1 Pro versus Gemini 3 evaluation, so neither Google’s benchmark scores nor OpenAI’s early preference feedback establish an overall winner.

Can you use GPT-5.1 Pro in ChatGPT now?
No. OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes say GPT-5.1 models were no longer available in ChatGPT as of March 11, 2026. GPT-5.1 Pro should therefore be understood as a historical launch, not a model readers can currently select there. Check OpenAI’s release notes for its availability notice.
