GOP means Group of Pictures: a pattern of compressed video frames that lets a codec represent some frames by referring to others. GOP size is usually measured in frames, so its duration depends on frame rate. There is no universally best GOP; the right setting depends on compression, decoder access, and the delivery platform.
What a GOP is
Rather than store every frame as a complete image, a video encoder can use relationships between frames. A GOP groups frames into a structure that includes frames coded independently and frames predicted from other frames. The exact pattern depends on the codec and encoder; it is not always the same fixed sequence.
A rough analogy is a complete page followed by notes describing changes relative to nearby pages. The analogy has limits: codecs predict from coded image data, and their reference structures can be more complex than a simple page-by-page sequence.
What I-, P-, B-, and IDR-frames do
- I-frame: coded independently of other frames. An I-frame is not necessarily an IDR frame.
- P-frame: predicted using earlier frames.
- B-frame: can use earlier or later frames as references.
- IDR frame: a special refresh boundary. AWS explains that frames following an IDR do not reference frames from before it, allowing decoding to proceed from that boundary without those earlier references. AWS Elemental Server’s GOP guidance describes this distinction.
A common GOP may begin with an IDR frame and then contain a mixture of B- and P-frames, but encoder and codec choices determine the actual structure.

GOP size and keyframe interval
GOP size is commonly expressed as a number of frames, while a keyframe interval describes the maximum spacing between keyframes in some encoder controls. To convert a frame interval into time, divide by the frame rate: at 30 frames per second (fps), 30 frames span about one second and 60 span about two seconds.
AWS Elemental MediaConvert describes GOPs of roughly one to two seconds as typical guidance, not a universal requirement. Its examples correspond to 30 or 60 frames at 30 fps. The appropriate value depends on the codec, encoder, content, bitrate, and delivery workflow. AWS Elemental MediaConvert’s video-quality guide gives that context.

Do not assume the configured interval forces every keyframe to land exactly that far apart. Apple’s VideoToolbox documentation says a maximum interval of zero leaves keyframe placement to the encoder; encoders may also insert keyframes more often than the maximum interval. Apple explains that keyframes reset inter-frame dependencies, so a decoder can start from a keyframe and correctly decode subsequent difference frames. Apple’s keyframe-interval documentation describes the setting.
How GOP settings affect a video
Compression and file size
Predicted frames can encode changes relative to reference frames rather than repeatedly coding a complete image. More opportunity for inter-frame prediction can improve compression efficiency, but the outcome depends on scene content and encoder decisions. GOP size is only one part of the configuration; it does not guarantee a particular file size or visual quality.

Seeking and decoder entry
More frequent keyframes create more frequent points from which a decoder can begin without relying on earlier frame dependencies. This can help with seeking or joining playback, but may come with a compression cost. Apple’s explanation of keyframes and dependency resets applies here: a keyframe prepares the decoder to process the difference frames that follow.
Segmented streaming
For segmented delivery, such as HLS or DASH, GOP and segment boundaries may need to align. AWS Elemental Live recommends closed-GOP cadence 1 for segmented outputs; requirements vary by service and workflow, so check the target platform’s specifications rather than treating that recommendation as a universal rule. AWS Elemental Live’s GOP configuration guidance covers this use case.

How to choose a GOP interval
- Start with the delivery platform’s requirements. Check its codec, keyframe interval, closed-GOP, and segment-alignment requirements. A platform specification takes precedence over a general rule of thumb.
- Convert the desired interval into frames. Multiply frame rate by seconds. For example, at 30 fps, a one-second interval is 30 frames; at 60 fps, it is 60 frames.
- Check what the encoder control actually sets. Distinguish GOP size or maximum keyframe interval from B-frame count and closed-GOP behavior. FFmpeg documents
g(also calledkeyint) as the maximum GOP size, andbfas the control for the number of B-frames between I- and P-frames. Names and exact behavior can vary by encoder implementation. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes these options. - Consider access and compression together. Shorter intervals give more frequent decoder entry points; longer intervals can provide more opportunity for inter-frame prediction. Compare the resulting quality and size at your intended bitrate rather than assuming one setting always wins.
- Account for scene changes and segments. Find out whether the encoder inserts keyframes at scene changes and whether segment boundaries must align with closed GOPs. Verify the output in the target player or delivery workflow.
Common GOP-setting mistakes
- Confusing frames with seconds: a GOP size of 60 means 60 frames, not necessarily two seconds. It is two seconds at 30 fps, but one second at 60 fps.
- Treating every I-frame as an IDR: an I-frame is independently coded; an IDR additionally establishes the no-reference-across-boundary property for following frames.
- Assuming one interval suits every use: platform requirements, segment duration, codec, content, and decoder-entry needs can change the right choice.
- Changing B-frame count when you mean GOP size: these are distinct encoder controls. Check the encoder’s documentation for the exact option and behavior.
- Expecting an exact cadence from a maximum: a maximum interval allows keyframes to appear more frequently, including when the encoder chooses to place them at scene changes.
What GOP means when streaming a prerecorded video
GOP settings describe how frames are encoded; they do not, by themselves, keep a stream running. If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service from Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
