Gemini can serve as the primary assistant on an eligible Android phone or tablet, handling questions, writing help, selected calls and messages, device controls, and supported smart-home tasks. It is not a complete replacement for every Google Assistant feature, and what works depends on your device, language, country, account, permissions, and settings. If a feature you rely on isn’t supported in Gemini, Google documents switching back to Google Assistant.
What Gemini can do on an Android phone
Gemini is useful both as a conversational assistant and as a way to perform selected phone actions. You can interact by typing or speaking, and use images or camera input for questions. When invoked over another app with the relevant setup, it can answer questions about what is on your screen. Google describes some familiar quick voice actions as still being powered by Assistant while Gemini’s capabilities develop, so the assistant you see may rely on both systems behind the scenes. Google’s overview of Gemini on Android and its mobile app guidance describe supported interactions.
- Ask questions and get help with writing, brainstorming, learning, translation, and planning.
- Ask about an image or camera view, or about the screen when using Gemini over another app.
- Use selected quick actions for calls, messages, alarms, timers, media, and phone settings.
- Control supported smart-home devices and use some routines after connecting Google Home.
Which Android controls and actions are supported?
Google’s Device assistance documentation lists actions such as opening apps; managing alarms and timers; handling media and volume; changing selected settings; and controlling flashlight, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, and Battery Saver. The exact actions available can vary. The Google app hosts Gemini’s assistant capabilities, and some actions require it to be selected as the default digital assistant.
Reading or replying to notifications requires notification access. If an action does not work, check the relevant permission and default-assistant setting rather than assuming the phone cannot perform it. See Google’s Device assistance instructions for the current action list and setup details.

Can Gemini make calls or send messages?
Gemini can place calls through the Phone app when the required setup is in place. Google lists an Android device, an active phone plan, the Gemini app, saved contacts, and Phone permission for the Google app as prerequisites. Calling through the Phone app is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, in the web app, or during Live chats in the documentation reviewed. Gemini’s Phone app integration cannot accept or reject incoming calls.
Do not use Gemini for emergency services. Place an emergency call directly in the device’s calling app. For current requirements and limits, consult Google’s Gemini Android help.

Google also documents a separate business-calling task that is distinct from ordinary calls to saved contacts. Its eligibility requirements are narrow and rollout-dependent: the help page specifies US location, age 18 or older, a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, a Google AI subscription, the Public Beta Phone by Google app, current Gemini app versions, and English as the device language. These criteria describe that specific feature, not a general requirement for ordinary Gemini calls. Check Google’s business-calling availability information before relying on it.
Can Gemini control smart-home devices?
After connecting Google Home, Gemini can work with supported devices that the signed-in Google Account is allowed to access. Some routines are supported, but not every Assistant routine or action is available; Gemini reports when an action is unsupported. Device access, the linked account, and the particular command all matter. Google’s current details are in its smart-home controls guidance.

Smart-home controls have safety limits. For example, Gemini cannot perform some security-sensitive actions, including unlocking a door. Google warns: “Home controls are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical purposes. Don’t rely on Gemini for requests that could result in injury or harm if they fail.”
What works while the phone is locked?
When lock-screen use is enabled, Gemini can handle selected requests without unlocking, including general questions, notifications, Maps information, media and device controls, alarms and timers, and some smart-home actions. Calls and messages from the lock screen require a specific setting and opt-in. Requests involving personal information may still require you to unlock the phone. Where Gemini falls short of Google Assistant
Gemini does not reproduce every Google Assistant capability. Google lists Interpreter mode and some podcast, news, radio, and third-party music services among features that may not be supported. Some routines and other actions are also unavailable. Support can change, so check the exact task you depend on rather than assuming feature parity.
Availability is also not universal. Gemini features may vary by country, language, device, account type, age eligibility, settings, and rollout. Some quick actions are unavailable with work or school accounts, and supervised accounts may have restrictions. “Hey Google” and Voice Match have additional language and account requirements. Check Google’s availability information for your situation.

Changing the assistant on your phone does not replace Google Assistant across every product. Assistant remains available on many devices where the Gemini mobile app is not, including smart displays, speakers, TVs, and cars. Pixel Tablet behavior also differs depending on whether it is locked or unlocked. The phone setting is not a portfolio-wide change.

This is a task-by-task choice, not a universal “better assistant” verdict. List the actions you use most—such as notification replies, a particular music service, a routine, or lock-screen calls—and confirm those work before making Gemini your default.
How to switch back to Google Assistant
- Open the Gemini app on your Android device.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Settings.
- Choose Digital assistants from Google or the assistant-selection option shown on your version, then select Google Assistant. Google’s documented route is labeled Switch to Google Assistant; labels can vary by app version.
- Confirm the change if prompted. To return to Gemini later, use the same assistant settings and select Gemini.
Google provides the current steps in its switch-back instructions. Switching the phone’s assistant does not change which assistant is available on other devices.
