Fortinet’s January 2016 review extended an SSH management-authentication flaw beyond FortiOS to certain versions of FortiSwitch, FortiAnalyzer, and FortiCache. The reported route used SSH Interactive-Keyboard authentication and a shared password, but required the device’s SSH “Administrative Access” feature to be enabled. Fortinet described the behavior as an unintended consequence of a management feature; contemporary media called it a “backdoor” because of the access it could provide.
Which Fortinet products and versions were affected?
Contemporary reporting summarizing Fortinet’s advisory listed these affected firmware ranges and updates:
| Product | Reported affected versions | Reported fixed version |
|---|---|---|
| FortiAnalyzer | 5.0.0–5.0.11 and 5.2.0–5.2.4 | 5.0.12 and 5.2.5 |
| FortiSwitch | 3.3.0–3.3.2 | 3.3.3 |
| FortiCache | 3.0.0–3.0.7 | 3.0.8 |
The same reporting said FortiAnalyzer 4.3 and FortiCache 3.1 branches were not affected. These are historical ranges reported in 2016, not guidance for current deployments. For a device still in service, check Fortinet’s current advisory and product support information rather than relying on these old version numbers. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous coverage summarized the expanded product scope and version ranges.
How did the SSH access issue work?
The reported weakness involved SSH in Interactive-Keyboard mode. A shared password could provide administrative access to an affected device when SSH “Administrative Access” was enabled. That condition matters: the reports do not establish that every device was reachable over SSH, nor that every vulnerable device was accessed or compromised.

- Next-generation firewall for small office and branch security with NGFW, IPS, and web filtering built in
- Secure SD-WAN improves cloud and SaaS performance while maintaining consistent security policy
- Deep visibility with SSL inspection and application control to identify and govern encrypted traffic
- Simple deployment and centralized management via FortiGate Cloud or FortiManager
- Seamless integration with FortiSwitch and FortiAP for a unified, secure wired and wireless network
The disclosure broadened an issue already discussed in connection with FortiOS to include FortiSwitch switches, FortiAnalyzer logging and reporting appliances, and FortiCache web caching appliances. The common concern was management-plane access, not a claim that the products’ ordinary user-facing functions were all exposed in the same way. Ars Technica’s January 2016 report covered the additional product families.
Why was it called a “backdoor”?
Contemporary coverage used “backdoor” to describe the practical effect: a shared credential could bypass the expected SSH authentication protection under the stated configuration condition. Fortinet rejected the implication that it had deliberately added malicious access. In a statement reproduced by Ars Technica and SecurityWeek, Fortinet said: “As previously stated, this vulnerability is an unintentional consequence of a feature that was designed with the intent of providing seamless access from an authorized FortiManager to registered FortiGate devices. It is important to note, this is not a case of a malicious backdoor implemented to grant unauthorized user access.” The reproduced statement was attributed to Fortinet, not to a named individual.

- The affected scope reported at the time included specified releases of FortiSwitch, FortiAnalyzer, and FortiCache, in addition to the earlier FortiOS discussion.
- The reported SSH route depended on Interactive-Keyboard authentication and SSH “Administrative Access” being enabled.
- The version table records historical affected and fixed releases; it is not a substitute for current vendor guidance about a live system.
This story is about a January 2016 SSH management-authentication issue. It is separate from the FortiMail CVE-2026-104286 notice published by Canada on October 1, 2026, which describes a path traversal vulnerability and exploitation in the wild. The products, vulnerability, and disclosure date differ; the FortiMail notice should not be treated as an update to this 2016 incident. Canada’s FortiMail notice concerns that separate issue.
