Fiber installation usually means a technician brings a fiber line from a nearby pole or underground route into your home, installs a provider-specific endpoint such as an optical network terminal (ONT) or Fiber Jack, connects the router, and tests the service. Before the appointment, clear the likely work area, plan where equipment could go, confirm who must be home, and ask your provider about any special requirements for your property or connected devices.

What happens during fiber installation?

The exact process depends on the provider, the property, and how the fiber reaches your home. A common full-fiber installation has an outside connection and an indoor equipment setup.

  1. Plan the route. The technician checks how the line can reach the property, from an overhead pole or underground infrastructure. They may discuss where the cable will enter the home and where a small hole is needed.
  2. Prepare the exterior connection. The provider may attach or connect the line outside. Some exterior work can take place before the scheduled in-home appointment. If digging or drilling is needed, Openreach says it asks permission before work begins; renters may need landlord approval. Openreach’s installation guide describes its process and permissions.
  3. Install the indoor endpoint. The technician installs the provider’s equipment where the fiber enters the home. Openreach describes an external junction box and indoor ONT; GFiber uses a Fiber Jack. These are examples, not interchangeable equipment used by every provider.
  4. Connect and test the service. The router is connected to the fiber endpoint, and the technician checks that the connection works. GFiber’s installation instructions describe equipment setup, network validation, and a speed test; Openreach says its engineer checks the service before leaving.

How to prepare your home

Clear access to likely work areas

Move furniture and other obstacles away from the areas where a cable might enter and equipment might be installed. The technician may need access to both the exterior route and an indoor wall or corner. GFiber asks customers to clear the area where work may happen.

Think through equipment placement

Choose a preferred location for the fiber endpoint and router, ideally with usable power nearby where required. Treat it as a preference to discuss, not a guaranteed placement: the cable route and provider process can limit the options. Openreach recommends placing its ONT and router close together and near prepared double power sockets. GFiber says its technician works with the customer to choose the Fiber Jack location. See Openreach’s preparation checklist and GFiber’s appointment guidance.

Confirm who needs to be present

Ask your provider whether an adult must remain home for the appointment. Openreach requires someone over 18 to provide access and agree on equipment placement; GFiber also requires someone aged 18 or older for its appointment. These are provider-specific examples, so check the rule for your booking.

Flag phone-dependent alarms or health devices

If an intruder alarm, health pendant, or wrist alarm relies on your phone line, contact your provider before the installation. Openreach specifically advises customers to do this. Ask the alarm or device provider as well if you are unsure whether the equipment will continue working after a change in service.

Check appointment-specific instructions

Review the confirmation from your provider for account access, building entry, apps, or equipment requirements. For example, GFiber asks customers to have access to their sign-up email and password and describes using its app. If you rent or live in a managed building, check whether permission or advance access arrangements are needed for drilling or shared spaces.

How long does the appointment take?

There is no universal appointment length. Openreach says most installations take one to four hours, depending on property type and fiber routing; a blocked duct can make the visit longer. GFiber says its in-home appointment can take around two hours. These are provider estimates, not a guarantee for other providers or homes.

Equipment, cables, and existing service

The ONT or Fiber Jack is part of the provider’s installation arrangement; you should not buy one independently. The router connects to the endpoint, but the equipment and power arrangements vary. GFiber says its router connects to the Fiber Jack with an Ethernet cable, while its Help page explains that some Fiber Jack models plug into a standard outlet and others receive power from the router. Follow the instructions for the equipment actually installed rather than purchasing generic replacement hardware. GFiber’s Fiber Jack guide explains the model differences.
