They do not count every SSH probe, identify unique attackers, or prove that an account was compromised. To interpret the figures, separate failed matches from bans, check what logs the jail reads, and confirm how your installed version reports and retains statistics.
How to check Fail2ban’s SSH counters
For a jail named sshd, run fail2ban-client status sshd. To see server status and all jails, use fail2ban-client status and fail2ban-client status --all. The August 2026 manual for Fail2ban v1.1.2.dev1 also documents fail2ban-client statistics for current statistics across jails; its statistics table includes the jail, backend, found count, and banned count. These commands and displayed fields can vary by version, so check fail2ban-client --help or the manual installed on your system. Fail2ban client manual.
What each status field means

“Failed” and “banned” describe different stages. A matching failure can be counted without triggering a ban; an address is banned only when it meets the jail’s configured conditions. Exact counter reset and persistence behavior depends on the Fail2ban version, database configuration, and jail lifecycle. Fail2ban’s manual documents database storage and ban-history retention controls, including dbpurgeage, so do not assume “Total” means all time. Fail2ban jail configuration manual.
What the counts can tell you about SSH activity
Fail2ban monitors configured log files or systemd journals and looks for entries matching a jail’s filter. It records matching failures and, once an address reaches the configured maxretry within findtime, invokes the jail’s ban action. The counts therefore describe activity visible to that host, in the selected input, as recognized by that filter—not all attempts made against SSH.

- A high Total failed count means the jail has recorded many matching failure events during its accounting period.
- A rising ban count means addresses have met the jail’s configured ban conditions often enough to trigger its action.
- Neither figure establishes whether anyone logged in successfully, who operated the source address, how sophisticated an attempt was, or how much SSH probing occurred beyond the jail’s inputs.
The project’s documentation gives an example of five failures within ten minutes. That illustrates how maxretry and findtime can be configured; it is not a universal default or a statistic about attack prevalence. Fail2ban project wiki.
Why zero counts or missing bans may be misleading
Zero detections
A zero does not prove there has been no SSH activity. Check that the jail is enabled, its backend and log path or journal match are correct, and its filter recognizes the log format. A jail may also show no ban because failures have not reached its threshold. The project wiki lists these configuration and matching issues as causes to investigate; the jail manual describes behavior when configured log paths do not match and systemd backend fallback conditions.

Unexpected time-window counts
Time parsing can affect which entries fall within a window such as findtime. Fail2ban interprets log lines without an explicit timezone using its own system timezone unless configured otherwise; the manual recommends that services emit explicit offsets where possible. Check the host timezone and timestamp format when counts do not align with the log entries you expect. Fail2ban jail configuration manual.
Failures appear, but no effective block
Review the effective jail configuration, threshold, and action. A logged “Ban” message is not independent proof that firewall enforcement worked: the project wiki notes that action problems can leave an address able to connect even after Fail2ban logs a ban. Verify the action and firewall state separately.

How to compare counts across hosts or time periods
Raw counters are only useful comparisons when the measurement conditions are comparable. Before concluding that one host is seeing more attacks, or that activity has changed, align these factors:
- Jail and input: compare the same jail and the same log source or backend.
- Interval and time handling: use the same observation period and account for timezone and timestamp parsing.
- Thresholds: compare
maxretryandfindtime; different settings change how often failures lead to bans. - Counter meaning: distinguish current/windowed values from accumulated totals, and check version and database context.
- Metric: keep failed matches and bans separate. If you calculate unique IP addresses or a rate per IP, state how you derived it and the interval and denominator. Those are not the same as Fail2ban’s raw found or banned counters.
What Fail2ban metrics cannot establish
These counters are operational evidence about what one configured jail recognized and did. They are not a measure of internet-wide SSH brute-force prevalence, a complete attack log, or a security audit proving that the server is safe. The Fail2ban project states: “Though Fail2Ban is able to reduce the rate of incorrect authentication attempts, it cannot eliminate the risk presented by weak authentication.” Fail2ban project README. Use strong authentication and verify that the configured ban action is actually enforced.
