Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gb/s) over a standard 100 m channel. Cat6 also supports Gigabit Ethernet and can support 10 Gb/s Ethernet over shorter runs. Cat6A supports 10 Gb/s over a standard 100 m channel. Those are cable-system capabilities, not a promise that every connected device will reach that speed.

Fluke Networks’ category comparison lists Cat6 10GBASE-T reach as up to 35 m, while Intel’s technical guide gives 55 m. Those figures come from different source descriptions and should not be treated as one universal cutoff. The applicable cabling requirements and installation conditions affect the usable reach. What the cable ratings mean
Ethernet speed is not the MHz rating
The 100 MHz, 250 MHz, and 500 MHz figures describe the frequency ratings Fluke lists for Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A. They are not data rates and should not be converted into Mbps or Gbps. Ethernet modes such as 1000BASE-T and 10GBASE-T identify the link technology and nominal rate, while the cable category describes the cabling system’s performance capability.
Category alone does not set the negotiated link speed
Ethernet works over different physical media, including twisted-pair copper and fiber; the IEEE 802.3 standard covers Ethernet LAN operation across those media. The cable is only one part of a copper link. The network port at each end must support the desired mode, and the cabling and connecting hardware must meet their relevant standards, be installed correctly, and pass a compliant field test. Which category should you use?
- Choose Cat5e for a standard Gigabit Ethernet run when 1 Gb/s is sufficient and the channel is within the standard 100 m length.
- Choose Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet or a 10GBASE-T run whose shorter reach and installation conditions suit the application. Do not assume Cat6 will provide 10 Gb/s across 100 m.
- Choose Cat6A when the target is 10GBASE-T across a full 100 m channel.
Before selecting a cable, check the Ethernet capabilities of the router, switch, computer, and any intermediate equipment, as well as the complete run length. Upgrading the cable cannot make a Gigabit-only port negotiate a 10 Gb/s link.
How to check an installed cable run
If an installed link does not perform as expected, check the negotiated link mode on the connected equipment and verify that each port supports it. For fixed cabling, a compliant field test can identify whether the installed channel meets its intended category and Ethernet use. Fluke Networks describes its LinkIQ tester as checking cable performance up to 10GBASE-T and providing wire-map and distance-to-fault troubleshooting functions; see the LinkIQ product information.
