Engineers can bring a distinct kind of product insight: they understand how a system behaves, what its technical constraints are, and what new approaches technology may make possible. Product managers often bring different evidence about customer needs, markets, and business goals. Strong product decisions draw on both rather than treating either role as the sole authority on the product.
What kind of product insight do engineers bring?
Engineers work close to the systems that make a product function. Their knowledge can reveal dependencies, architectural trade-offs, performance limits, and implementation constraints that are easy to overlook when a feature is discussed only as a customer request.
That technical perspective can also expand the solution space. A customer may describe a problem without knowing what technology could address it; an engineer may recognize an approach that other teammates would not consider. In product discovery, engineering experience can therefore help the team explore what is possible, not just estimate a solution already chosen.
Teresa Torres describes product managers and engineers as bringing different experiences to the same customer interview. Her framing is complementary: useful solutions require understanding both what customers need and what technology makes possible. Product Talk’s discussion of engineers in product discovery explains that perspective.

What can engineers learn from customer discovery?
Customer interviews and feedback give engineers context for interpreting the problem behind a request. Hearing customers directly can help them distinguish a requested feature from the difficulty the customer is trying to resolve. Reviewing support tickets or other feedback can expose recurring friction and edge cases that may affect a technical solution.
Atlassian describes engineers taking part in user interviews, reviewing support tickets, and accessing customer feedback as part of a product workflow. That is a vendor description of a practice, not independent evidence that the practice produces a particular measured outcome. The practical point is that customer context can be made available to the people shaping and building solutions, rather than summarized only after decisions have been made.

Why is technical insight not a substitute for product judgment?
Knowing what can be built does not establish which customer problem matters most, how many customers have it, or whether solving it advances the business. Technical feasibility is one kind of evidence; customer demand and business value are different kinds. A technically elegant solution can still address a low-priority problem.
Product managers contribute customer, market, and business context that engineering expertise alone cannot supply. Prioritization should remain explicit and grounded in customer evidence and product goals. Engineers’ technical judgment should shape the decision and help test possible solutions, not stand in for evidence about demand.

How can product teams avoid losing context between product and engineering?
When product managers pass requirements to engineers without reviewing the customer and business context behind them, important meaning can be lost. Engineers may need to ask for clarification, and a requirement can be implemented as written even when the underlying customer problem suggests a different approach. Martin Fowler describes this as a coordination risk in feature handoffs, not an inevitable outcome of every product-engineering relationship. Fowler’s article on product managers and engineers discusses the problem of context being lost across that boundary.
A more useful workflow brings the people making product and engineering decisions together while the problem and options are still being explored:

- Share the customer problem. Give engineers access to customer interviews, feedback, or support evidence, along with the relevant business goal.
- Explore solutions together. Use engineering knowledge to identify constraints, dependencies, and approaches the team may not have considered.
- Keep prioritization explicit. Decide which problem to address using customer evidence and product goals, not feasibility alone.
- Review decisions in context. Discuss requirements with engineering rather than relying on a one-way handoff, so technical choices remain connected to the reason for the work.
This is a practical application of the sources’ arguments, not a claim that one specific workflow has been proven to improve outcomes in every organization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should teams take away?
- Engineering participation can add insight about system behavior, technical constraints, and newly possible solutions.
- Direct customer context helps engineers interpret needs rather than treating feature requests as self-explanatory.
- Customer evidence and product judgment are still needed to decide which problems matter and whether a solution creates value.
- Shared discovery can reduce the risk that customer or business context disappears in a product-to-engineering handoff.
For readers who want a broader discussion of product-team roles, INSPIRED, 2nd Edition includes a chapter on engineers. Its relevance is as further reading on collaboration, not proof that one role universally understands a product better.
