That makes it useful for devices such as a network printer, camera, or Wi-Fi access point. The cable itself does not create internet service, Wi-Fi coverage, or power: what it can do depends on the devices and network equipment at each end.
What an Ethernet cable does on a home network
Ethernet provides a wired connection between a device and a local network. Computers, printers, network storage, phones, cameras, and access points can use that connection. A device on the network may also reach the internet, but only if the network has an upstream internet connection and is configured to provide access. A cable connecting two devices does not, by itself, supply internet service. Eaton’s Ethernet cable overview discusses Ethernet as a network connection.
How Ethernet can carry power as well as data
Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electrical power and network data over the same Ethernet cable. It can simplify a connection to a compatible endpoint, particularly when that device needs to be placed somewhere without a convenient outlet. The power comes from compatible power-sourcing equipment—typically a PoE switch or injector—not from the cable alone. Both the source and the endpoint must support compatible PoE standards and power requirements. Cisco and the U.S. Department of Energy describe PoE as a standardized way to combine power and data on one cable. Cisco’s PoE overview and the Department of Energy’s PoE overview explain the technology.
Useful PoE examples around the home
Security cameras
A PoE IP camera can be installed where you want to monitor an entry, garage, or other area even if there is no nearby electrical outlet. One run can provide the camera’s network connection and power, provided the camera accepts the PoE standard and power level supplied by the switch or injector. Not every camera with an Ethernet port supports PoE; check its specifications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wi-Fi access points
A compatible PoE access point can be mounted in a useful location—such as a ceiling or hallway—without needing a separate power cable at that spot. PoE powers the access point, while the access point provides wireless coverage; an Ethernet cable alone does not create Wi-Fi. Its coverage still depends on the access point and the network setup.
IP phones and other devices
IP phones are another established PoE use. Documented applications beyond common home devices include sensors, lighting, access-control and alarm equipment, kiosks, digital signage, professional AV equipment, and some industrial or building-control devices. These examples are equipment designed for PoE; an ordinary device does not become PoE-compatible just because it has an Ethernet jack. See the Ethernet Alliance’s PoE overview and Microchip’s introduction to PoE for additional examples.

What to check before choosing PoE equipment or cable
- Confirm the endpoint supports PoE. Check the camera, access point, phone, or other device’s documentation for its supported standard and power requirement. An Ethernet port alone does not establish PoE support.
- Match the power source. Verify that the PoE switch or injector supports a compatible standard and can meet the endpoint’s requirement on the port you plan to use.
- Check the overall power budget. A switch can have a total PoE budget shared across ports, so confirm it can power all planned devices at once as well as meet each device’s per-port needs.
- Choose cable and route for the installation. Match the cable to the devices and run. Category alone does not guarantee a working PoE installation; cable, route, endpoint requirements, and source capacity all matter. Cisco discusses Cat 5 and later PoE standards, and the Ethernet Alliance describes Cat 5e or better in PoE contexts. That does not make a premium cable category necessary for every household.
- Account for run length and conditions. Cisco gives 100 metres as the maximum length in the standards context its overview describes; do not treat that as a universal guarantee for every device or installation. For a permanent, outdoor, or difficult route, check applicable equipment and installation requirements before running cable.
For the standards context in its overview, Cisco also discusses IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 with a 90 W source-side maximum. That figure describes the source side; it does not mean an endpoint necessarily receives 90 W. See Cisco’s explanation of PoE standards and power for that qualification.

If a device only needs a network connection and has its own power supply, Ethernet can still be useful without PoE. A wired connection can link it to local devices and network services; internet access depends on the network’s upstream connection and configuration. Consider PoE specifically when the endpoint supports it and putting power and data on one run solves a placement or cabling problem.
