“Word of finger” means interpersonal communication through digital media, especially messages typed on a keyboard. It is a playful analogy with “word of mouth”: information that once spread through speech now spreads through typed or digitally shared messages.

How the phrase is used

“Word of finger” describes people passing information to one another through digital communication. The phrase emphasizes typing, but its definition is broader than any particular device or service. A dictionary-derived entry defines it as “Interpersonal communication by digital media, especially using keyboard devices” and labels it an uncountable noun. Dictionary-derived entry

Its construction borrows the familiar pattern of “word of mouth,” substituting the finger used to type for the mouth used to speak. The intended contrast is spoken recommendations or news versus messages sent digitally.

Examples in context

In a Welsh Affairs Committee discussion about digital inclusion and how information circulates locally, Alun Michael interjected, “Word of finger, perhaps!” Paul Murphy responded that “The message gets around locally at ward level in local government terms, if you like.” The exchange took place on 19 May 2009. The committee transcript identifies itself as uncorrected evidence, so it is best treated as a recorded exchange rather than an approved verbatim transcript. These citations document examples, but do not establish that the expression is common. Dictionary-derived usage citations

Is “word of finger” an old expression?

A separate 1892 citation contains the wording “by word of finger” in a story about a deaf boy reciting to a teacher. That is an older instance of similar wording in a different context; it does not show that the modern digital idiom dates to 1892 or that the two uses form a continuous history. 1892 citation
