It may help make performance more consistent under load, but it does not guarantee a higher frame rate, and Microsoft does not publish a universal FPS increase.
What Windows Game Mode does
Microsoft describes Game Mode as a Windows feature that can give a game “exclusive or priority access to hardware resources.” The game must be in the foreground and have focus before exclusive resources are granted. Microsoft says the feature works by default for most Windows games without requiring the player to opt in. Microsoft’s Game Mode documentation is a previous-versions API page; it notes that the Game Mode APIs are deprecated in Windows 10 version 1809 and later, so it is not a complete specification of how every current Windows build implements the feature.
In practical terms, Game Mode is meant to favor gameplay when Windows has competing work to schedule. Its potential value depends on what else the PC is doing: Microsoft says the performance increase is “directly related to the number and impact of other activities running on the device.” A lightly loaded system may have little room for improvement.
Does Game Mode increase FPS?
It can help performance when other activity is competing for resources, but there is no dependable FPS gain to quote for every game and PC. Microsoft’s 2017 description said Game Mode could produce “more sustainable framerates” on average, particularly when hardware resources were contested. That was qualitative guidance, not a controlled modern benchmark or a promise of higher peak FPS. Microsoft’s 2017 Windows Experience Blog post does not establish a percentage increase.

If you want to know whether the toggle matters on your PC, compare the same game, scene, graphics settings, and background workload with Game Mode on and off. Keep other settings unchanged; otherwise, you will not know which change affected the result.
Does it stop Windows Update or background tasks?
Do not treat Game Mode as a switch that shuts down all background work or blocks every update and notification. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated October 2, 2018, Microsoft said Game Mode then suppressed Windows Update driver installations and blocked restart notifications while gaming. That announcement describes the feature at that time; it does not establish that every update, notification, or background process is blocked on current Windows builds. Microsoft’s October 2018 announcement is historical rather than current build-by-build documentation.

How Game Mode differs from other gaming settings
Several Windows controls can affect game performance, but they do different jobs. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

Should you turn Game Mode on or off?
Game Mode is intended to help when the system has competing work, so it is reasonable to leave it enabled and see how your games behave. If you suspect it is affecting a particular game, compare the same scene and workload with the setting on and off rather than assuming the mode is responsible for a change. A result on one PC or game does not establish what will happen on another.

If adjusting related settings, treat them as separate experiments. Windows power mode can trade battery life and heat for performance, while windowed-game optimizations apply only to compatible games and display modes on Windows 11. Neither is another name for Game Mode.
