The Dyson Supersonic Nural’s Scalp protect mode automatically lowers the dryer’s heat as it approaches your hair and scalp. A Time of Flight sensor measures distance, and Dyson says the mode adjusts heat toward 55°C near the head. The illuminated capsule changes color to indicate the heat level. It is intended to make close-up drying more comfortable—not a clinically proven way to prevent scalp injury or hair damage.
How Scalp protect mode works
Dyson says the Nural projects an invisible infrared beam and uses a Time of Flight sensor to measure the distance between the dryer and your hair. With Scalp protect mode active, the dryer responds automatically: as it gets closer, it reduces air temperature. That lets you move closer to the scalp without manually changing the heat setting during the movement. Dyson also says the mode can override custom heat settings when used with supported attachments. In its March 18, 2024 launch announcement, Dyson said the heat reduces toward 55°C as the dryer nears the head. That is Dyson’s description of the mode’s target behavior; it is not an independently measured scalp-temperature result. Dyson’s launch announcement
What the changing lights mean
The illuminated capsule changes color to show the heat level. Dyson’s UK launch announcement identifies blue or yellow as low heat, orange as medium heat, and red as high heat. The lights indicate the dryer’s heat level, not a measurement of scalp temperature.

Which attachments support the mode?
Dyson lists Scalp protect mode as compatible with the Gentle air attachment, Styling concentrator, and Smoothing nozzle. Dyson support says it does not work with the diffuser or Flyaway smoother. How it differs from the original Supersonic
The Nural’s distinctive feature is distance-responsive heat adjustment. Dyson says the original Supersonic already uses a glass-bead thermistor to measure air temperature 40 times per second; the Nural adds a sensor-driven response to how close the dryer is to the hair. What the evidence does—and does not—show
Dyson presents Scalp protect mode as a way to maintain a comfortable, consistent scalp temperature and provide gentler close-up drying. Its documentation explains how the feature works, but does not establish that it prevents injury or reduces hair damage. A TechRadar reviewer said the mode worked reliably in their hands-on test and noted quick drying with less heat; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison across users, hair types, or scalp conditions.
