SOS or SOS only in an iPhone’s status bar means it is not connected to your own carrier’s cellular network. It may still be able to place an emergency call through another carrier’s network, if one is available, but ordinary cellular service is not working. The icon alone does not guarantee an emergency call will connect.

What SOS means—and what it does not

Apple says iPhone displays SOS only when the carrier’s cellular network is unavailable and may try to route emergency calls through another network. Whether another network can carry a call depends on availability in your location.

SOS is different from No Service or Searching. Those labels indicate the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network; SOS specifically signals that emergency calling through another network may be possible. None of these labels means normal cellular service is available.

Why your iPhone may show SOS

The status bar tells you the phone is not connected to its usual carrier network, but it does not identify the cause. Coverage, carrier network or account status, SIM problems, roaming settings, and possible device hardware issues may all need to be checked. The icon by itself is not enough to determine which applies to your phone.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

What to do when SOS appears

Try the checks that fit your situation, then contact your carrier if the connection does not return.

  1. Prompt a fresh network connection: Turn Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off. Apple recommends this when trying to reconnect to the carrier network. See Apple’s steps for SOS, No Service, or Searching.
  2. If you use a physical SIM: Remove it and reinsert it. If it is damaged or unsuitable, ask your carrier about a replacement SIM.
  3. If you are traveling internationally: Check that data roaming is enabled for the relevant line.
  4. Check with your carrier: If SOS or No Service persists, ask the carrier to check your account and network status. If the carrier rules out those issues and suspects a device problem, Apple says service may be needed.
  5. Consider diagnostics: On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app may offer additional diagnostics.

Is SOS the same as Emergency SOS via satellite?

No. The ordinary SOS status concerns the iPhone’s connection to its carrier network and the possibility of emergency calls through other networks. Emergency SOS via satellite is a separate feature for supported iPhone models when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Availability depends on the country or region, and a satellite connection requires a clear view of the sky; obstructions can prevent it. See Apple’s satellite connection guidance.

Do not assume that seeing SOS means an emergency call will connect. Apple describes the attempt as conditional on another network being available. If you have already called emergency services and no longer need help, Apple says not to hang up: wait for a responder and explain the situation.
