In Inscryption, “sacrifice” can mean several different things. In battle, you spend creatures on your side of the board to pay a card’s Blood cost; at a stone, you give up a deck card to pass its sigil to another; at the Bone Lord’s altar, you trade a card for starting Bones; and at a campfire, you risk losing a card while improving its stats. A card lost at a stone, altar, or campfire is gone from your current run’s deck—not from every future playthrough.

What does sacrificing a card mean in Inscryption?

The result depends on where the sacrifice happens. Combat sacrifices are a temporary resource payment for playing a card. The other transactions affect your run’s deck: a stone transfers sigils, the Bone Lord’s altar removes a card in exchange for a boon, and campfires improve a card while sometimes allowing the survivors to eat it. These are not interchangeable choices.

The practical question is always: what leaves, what do I get, and how long does that reward matter? A creature sacrificed in combat is not thereby deleted from your deck. A card handed over at an altar, stone, or risky campfire is removed from the deck for that run. The distinctions below focus on Leshy’s cabin gameplay and call out rules that are specific to Kaycee’s Mod.

How does sacrificing work during a battle?

In battle, you sacrifice creatures already on your side of the board to pay the Blood cost of a card you want to play. The payment lets you make a play in the current match; it is not the same as permanently removing a card from the run deck. Pro Game Guides’ overview of combat sacrifices explains this core distinction.

For example, if a card requires more Blood than you can pay from available sources, you may need to sacrifice one or more of your own creatures before placing it. That is a tactical exchange: the creature is spent to meet the play cost, while the card you played can affect the board. It is useful to think of the sacrificed creature as a resource for this turn, rather than as a card being offered to a deck-removal node.

Consider the opportunity cost before paying. A creature on the board may be blocking an opposing attacker, dealing damage, or carrying a useful sigil. Sacrificing it can enable a stronger play, but may also leave a lane exposed or give up a helpful effect. The best choice depends on the match state; there is no universal rule that the highest-cost card is always worth playing immediately.

What happens at a sacrificial stone?

At a sacrificial or mysterious stone, you give up a donor card so its sigil can be transferred to an eligible recipient. The donor leaves your current deck, while the recipient gains the donor’s sigil or sigils. This is a way to consolidate useful abilities onto a card you expect to play, not a way to gain starting Bones or raise a card’s stats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing, look at the donor’s sigil and ask whether it improves the recipient’s role. A helpful ability on a card that is reliably playable may be more valuable than the same ability on a card you rarely draw or cannot afford. That is a strategic consideration, not a guaranteed winning combination: the outcome depends on your deck, costs, and the fights ahead.

Not every donor-recipient pairing is valid. The Kaycee’s Mod General Info map-node guide notes that restrictions on added sigils can leave no valid transfer for a particular pair. In other words, do not assume that the stone will let you put any sigil on any card. Check the available selection at the node and be prepared to leave without making a transfer if the permitted options do not help your deck.

The price is permanent for the current run: you lose the donor card from that deck. The payoff is an inherited sigil on the recipient, which can matter across later fights in the same run. This makes a stone a poor fit if you are trying to preserve every copy of a specific card, but potentially attractive when one card’s ability is more useful concentrated on another.

What does the Bone Lord’s altar take, and what do you get?

The Bone Lord’s altar removes an offered card from your current run’s deck in return for a starting-Bones boon in fights. In Kaycee’s Mod, the cited community guide reports 1 starting Bone per fight for an ordinary offered card and 8 starting Bones per fight for an actual Black Goat. These are Kaycee’s Mod guide figures, not a universal promise for every mode or version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction between a Black Goat and another card with the Worthy Sacrifice sigil matters. The same guide says that a different card bearing Worthy Sacrifice does not count as a Black Goat for the stronger boon. A pelt grants no boon. So if you are deciding whether to give up a card for the larger reward, identify the actual card rather than assuming that a similar sigil or label qualifies.

The boon is useful because it gives you Bones at the start of each fight in that run. Whether that is worth a card depends on the card’s importance to your deck and how much you value the extra starting resource. An unwanted or redundant card may be a more comfortable offering than a key attacker or a card that enables a strategy you rely on.

“Permanent” here means that the offered card is gone for the current run. It does not mean that the game deletes the card from future runs or changes every deck you will ever build. Kaycee’s Mod is a repeatable Leshy’s Cabin expansion that unlocks after completing Inscryption for the first time, according to Daniel Mullins Games’ official announcement. Treat its run-specific rewards and limits as separate from a blanket rule about all playthroughs.

Should you risk a second campfire upgrade?

A campfire increases either a card’s Power by 1 or its Health by 2. The first warming is safe according to the cited references. Further warming can bring another stat improvement, but it also risks the survivors eating the card, which removes it from your current deck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The mode matters. In Kaycee’s Mod, the cited community guide says a card can receive only two campfire buffs total and reports a 50% chance that the card is eaten on the second buff. That probability and limit are Kaycee’s Mod-specific claims; do not apply them automatically to every story-campaign run. The Act I wiki material describes more opportunities after early progression, but does not support treating Kaycee’s Mod’s exact figures as universal Act I rules.

For a card you need, the first upgrade is the lower-risk decision described by the references. Before taking a second warming in Kaycee’s Mod, weigh the extra Power or Health against the possibility of losing the card outright. A buff to a key attacker may be valuable, but if the survivors eat it, you lose both the card and the benefit you hoped to build on it. If the card is expendable, the risk may be easier to accept; if your deck depends on it, caution is sensible.

Choose the stat that addresses the card’s actual weakness. Power helps it deal more damage; Health helps it withstand more damage. A card that already survives but needs to hit harder may benefit more from Power, while a card that must stay on the board to do its job may benefit more from Health. These are tactical judgments rather than guaranteed outcomes, since the value of either stat depends on the opponents and deck around it.

Can you use Ring Worm or Touch of Death to affect the campfire survivors?

Yes, Ring Worm is a notable interaction: if the survivors eat it, they disappear from later campfires in that run, removing the risk that they will eat another card at those later visits. This can be a deliberate deck-thinning choice, but it has a trade-off: once the survivors are gone, you also lose the possibility of having them eat a different unwanted card later.

References also describe Touch of Death cards, including Adder and Long Elk, as capable of affecting the survivors. However, accounts differ on whether a transferred Touch of Death sigil has the same result across modes or versions. It is safer to distinguish a card with native Touch of Death from a recipient that gained the sigil through a transfer, rather than assume every transferred version behaves identically.

Feeding a card to the survivors is not automatically a good way to clean up a deck. It spends the card you bring to the fire and can close off future campfire opportunities. Consider it when the card is expendable and the remaining deck benefits from its removal; do not count on the interaction as a universal method for removing any chosen card without cost.

Do campfire buffs and other changes carry over between runs?

No: a card lost or improved through these run events should be understood in the context of the current run, not as a permanent change to every future deck. In Kaycee’s Mod, the cited reference specifically says Ouroboros growth resets between runs and that the mode does not allow creation of the story campaign’s custom death cards.

That qualification matters because “permanent” can sound broader than the mechanic is. A card eaten at a campfire or offered to the Bone Lord is gone from the deck you are currently playing. It does not follow you as a missing card into every new run. Similarly, a run’s accumulated changes are not evidence that Kaycee’s Mod carries story-campaign custom death cards or Ouroboros growth forward.

If you are unsure which mode a guide describes, check whether it names the story campaign or Kaycee’s Mod before relying on a number. Kaycee’s Mod is explicitly a repeatable expansion unlocked after beating the game once; its run rules should be attributed to that mode when they are specific, rather than silently presented as all of Act I.

Which sacrifice should you choose?

Match the cost and reward to the problem you are trying to solve. Combat sacrifices buy a play now; stones move sigils; the Bone Lord trades a deck card for starting Bones; campfires improve stats while risking card loss. A decision that is good for one purpose can be poor for another.

Option What you give up What you gain When it can make sense
Battle sacrifice A creature on your side of the board for the current match Blood toward playing another card When the play is worth the board position or resource spent
Sacrificial stone The donor card from your current run’s deck Its sigil or sigils on an eligible recipient When the recipient benefits from an ability you want to use more reliably
Bone Lord’s altar The offered card from your current run’s deck Starting Bones in fights; Kaycee’s Mod guide figures are 1 for an ordinary card or 8 for an actual Black Goat When the card is worth giving up for a recurring resource advantage
Campfire No card for the safe first warming; a card if survivors eat it after further risk +1 Power or +2 Health per buff When a stat increase helps more than the risk of losing the card

Use four questions to make the choice:

  1. What is being paid? A board creature, a deck card, or the risk of losing a card?
  2. What does the reward do? Pay Blood now, transfer an ability, provide starting Bones, or raise a stat?
  3. When will the reward matter? This play, later fights in this run, or later campfire visits?
  4. Does the card remain in the current deck? Combat payment is not the same as the deck removal caused by a stone, altar, or eaten campfire card.

There is no single best node in every run. If your goal is a useful ability on a dependable card, consider a stone. If you have a card you can spare and want the Bones boon, consider the altar. If a card can use a stat increase, the first campfire buff is the straightforward option; in Kaycee’s Mod, make the second decision with its stated loss risk in mind. These recommendations are conditional on your deck and mode, not guaranteed winning lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I unlock Kaycee’s Mod in Inscryption?

Daniel Mullins Games’ official announcement says Kaycee’s Mod unlocks when you beat Inscryption for the first time. It is a repeatable Leshy’s Cabin expansion, so its mode-specific campfire rules should not be assumed to describe every story-campaign run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Worthy Sacrifice card count as a Black Goat at the Bone Lord’s altar?

No. The Kaycee’s Mod map-node guide distinguishes an actual Black Goat, which it associates with the 8-starting-Bones boon, from another card that merely bears Worthy Sacrifice. It also says a pelt grants no boon.

Can I transfer any sigil to any card at a stone?

No. Eligibility restrictions can prevent a particular transfer, and the Kaycee’s Mod reference notes that some pairs may have no valid option. Check the offered choices rather than planning around an assumed unrestricted transfer.

Does the Inscryption card pack let you play the sacrifice mechanics in real life?

No. Devolver Digital describes its collectible pack as containing the same 12 cards in every pack and says it is not part of a playable game. It is a collectible, not a tabletop implementation of the in-game sacrifice system.
