What “online” and “last seen” mean
WhatsApp’s About last seen and online help page defines online as having WhatsApp open on a device while connected to the internet. The indicator describes app activity and connection; it does not confirm that someone has opened a particular chat or read a message.
“Last seen” is different: it indicates when the person last used WhatsApp. Online is a current-status indicator, while last seen refers to past activity.
Why you may not see someone’s online status
A missing status does not establish that someone has blocked you or is ignoring you. WhatsApp lists several possible reasons:

- Precise Cutouts: The case has precise cutouts for easy access to all buttons, ports, and cameras, so you never have to sacrifice functionality for protection.
- The person’s privacy settings limit who can see their online or last-seen information.
- Your own privacy settings limit what you can see.
- You have not chatted with the person before or saved one another as contacts.
- The person may have blocked you.
- A temporary connection issue may prevent the status from appearing.
For a possible temporary connection issue, WhatsApp suggests closing and reopening the app. This may help if the status is not displaying because of a connection problem, but it cannot tell you which privacy or account circumstance applies.
How to control who sees your status
Open Settings > Privacy > Last seen and online. WhatsApp’s help instructions list audience options including Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, and Nobody. Exact labels or their placement can vary by device or app version.

WhatsApp’s privacy settings guidance says visibility is reciprocal: if you do not share your own last-seen information, you cannot see other users’ last-seen or online information. With Everyone selected for online visibility, WhatsApp says the person may still be included in a group’s online count.

WhatsApp says a person who has been blocked cannot see the blocker as online. However, WhatsApp notes that someone may still be counted in a group’s online count when the blocker’s online privacy setting is Everyone. That group count is not the same as being able to see the blocker’s individual online status. See WhatsApp’s reporting and blocking guidance.
