The phrase may describe the storage medium—such as semiconductor flash in an SSD rather than magnetic platters in an HDD—or the kind of NAND flash cell used inside a device. It can also refer to whether memory retains data without power. Those are different distinctions, and the phrase alone does not tell you how fast, durable, or reliable a particular drive is.
First, identify which meaning of “memory type” applies
In everyday descriptions, “memory” can refer to several different things. For a storage device, the most likely meanings are its physical storage medium or the organization of its flash memory cells. In technical discussions, it may instead mean whether memory is volatile or non-volatile.
- Storage medium: the technology that physically stores data, such as semiconductor chips or magnetic platters.
- Retention behavior: whether data remains stored when power is removed.
- NAND cell type: how many bits each flash memory cell stores.
These categories are not interchangeable. A device could be described by all three: for example, an SSD can use semiconductor flash, retain data without continuous power, and use NAND cells classified by bits per cell.
Does it mean the device uses one storage medium?
Sometimes. An SSD stores data on semiconductor chips and commonly uses flash memory; an HDD stores data on rotating magnetic platters. A device that combines storage media is often described as hybrid. OpenStax explains the distinction between HDD platter storage and SSD chip storage in its memory hierarchy overview, while the USPTO classification separately identifies magnetic disks, semiconductor storage, and hybrid devices in its G06F definitions.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
In this sense, “only one type” means the storage architecture relies on one medium rather than combining media. It does not, by itself, specify what kind of flash cells an SSD uses, or establish a performance or reliability level.
Does it mean one NAND flash cell type?
It may. SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC name NAND flash cell configurations according to how many bits each cell stores:

| Label | Bits stored per cell |
|---|---|
| SLC | 1 |
| MLC | 2 |
| TLC | 3 |
| QLC | 4 |
These are definitions of cell density, not a complete description of a drive’s behavior. TechTarget’s 2024 explanation of non-volatile memory and a 2021 patent application describe these bits-per-cell categories. The patent application also illustrates that a memory device may include mixed cell types or portions configured differently. Therefore, seeing “TLC” or “QLC” in a listing or diagnostic does not automatically prove every part of the device uses that configuration.
Bits per cell are only one comparison point. Capacity, read and write behavior for the workload you care about, endurance, and the full specifications for the exact model also matter. Do not assume that a single cell label guarantees a particular speed or useful life: behavior varies by device and implementation.

Could “one type” mean volatile or non-volatile memory?
Yes, especially in a technical description. Volatile memory loses its contents when power is removed; non-volatile memory retains data without continuous power. This describes data retention, not whether a device is an SSD or HDD. NAND flash is a form of non-volatile memory; the broad distinction is explained by Texas Instruments Precision Labs and TechTarget’s 2024 overview.
Texas Instruments cautions that broad comparisons are not absolute and advises readers to check the device datasheet to understand the behavior of the specific memory. That is important here: a broad label does not replace the product’s own specifications.

How to interpret the phrase in a listing or alert
- Find the exact wording. Note whether the description says SSD, HDD, flash, SLC, TLC, volatile, or non-volatile.
- Identify the source. A store listing, product manual, operating-system diagnostic, or technical document may use “memory” differently.
- Check the make and model. Use the manufacturer’s specifications or datasheet to verify the storage medium and, if stated, the memory-cell details.
- Ask what claim matters. If you are comparing devices, look for model-specific capacity, performance, and endurance information rather than inferring it from “one type.”
If the phrase appears in a manual or diagnostic and its meaning is still unclear, the make, model, and exact sentence are needed for a device-specific interpretation.
