That makes it possible to consider using it with another carrier, but it does not guarantee that the phone’s hardware, software, or exact model is compatible with that carrier. Before buying or switching, verify the phone’s lock status and check its IMEI with the carrier you want to use.
What “unlocked” means
A carrier-locked phone is restricted from being used on other providers’ networks. An unlocked phone does not have that restriction, so you can seek service from another carrier without replacing the handset. The Federal Communications Commission explains that unlocking can reduce switching costs by letting consumers change providers while keeping their phone (FCC 24-136).
“Unlocked” describes the phone’s lock status; it is not a promise that every carrier can activate it. A phone can be unlocked and still lack compatible hardware or software, or fail the destination carrier’s activation requirements. Verizon, for example, says a BYOD phone must be both unlocked and compatible with its network (Verizon BYOD). Xfinity likewise distinguishes a device that is incompatible from one that is compatible but locked (Xfinity Mobile BYOD).
Will an unlocked phone work with your carrier?
Possibly—but the answer depends on the exact phone and the carrier. Network compatibility can vary by model, and the carrier’s own activation rules determine whether it will accept the device. T-Mobile says an IMEI identifies a phone’s make and model and helps determine whether it is ready for its network (T-Mobile BYOD).

Use the carrier’s bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker with the phone’s IMEI before you buy it or move service. A product listing that says “unlocked” is not a substitute for that check, and no unlocked model should be assumed to work with every carrier.
How to check a phone before buying or switching
- Find the exact model and IMEI. On many phones, dial
*#06#to display the IMEI, or look in the phone’s settings. Metro also describes these ways to find it (Metro BYOD). Some devices have more than one identifier; provide the one the carrier requests. - Confirm the phone is unlocked. Ask the seller or the original carrier to verify its lock status. If it is locked, ask that carrier whether the phone qualifies for unlocking and how to request it. Eligibility and timing depend on the provider’s current terms and the device’s circumstances.
- Run the IMEI through your intended carrier’s checker. Follow the result from the carrier where you plan to activate service. If the result is unclear, contact the carrier with the exact model and identifier before committing to the purchase or switch.
- Check eSIM support if you plan to use it. Confirm that both the exact phone and destination carrier support eSIM provisioning. An unlocked phone may not support the connection method offered by a particular service.
SIM, eSIM, and carrier compatibility
A SIM connects a phone to a carrier’s network. An eSIM is the embedded digital counterpart that can be provisioned without inserting a physical card; Metro describes both connection methods (Metro eSIM). Neither method establishes that a particular phone is unlocked or compatible. Check the device and carrier separately, especially if you need eSIM rather than a physical SIM.

Carrier unlocking policies and what to verify
Unlock eligibility is governed by the original carrier’s current policy and the phone’s circumstances, not by a universal rule that applies to every handset. FCC 24-136 discusses commitments in the CTIA Consumer Code, which is voluntary: participating providers agree to unlock postpaid devices after the service contract or financing plan is fulfilled, and prepaid devices within one year after activation, subject to stated conditions. Those commitments are policy context, not a determination that a specific phone qualifies. Check the original provider’s current unlocking terms and ask about account standing, remaining financing, exceptions, and the steps required for your device.

For a used or marketplace-sourced phone, independently confirm that the destination carrier accepts the IMEI before paying. The carrier check is the practical test of its activation requirements; the sources cited here do not establish a universal blacklist or ownership-clearance test for every market. If the seller cannot confirm the lock status or provide the identifier needed for a carrier check, treat compatibility as unverified.
