A red sticker on a recycling bin has no universal meaning. Depending on the local service and bin, it may flag contaminated or unsorted recycling, warn that collection is suspended, identify an accepted recycling stream, or remind residents what should not go in general waste. Read the sticker and follow the instructions from the council or waste provider that issued it.
What a red sticker can mean
Local authorities use sticker colors differently, so the color alone cannot tell you what happened. These official examples show how much the purpose and next step can vary:
| Authority and bin | What the red sticker indicates | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Lambeth communal recycling bin | The bin is contaminated and awaiting collection as rubbish. On an individual wheelie bin, the sticker explains why it was not emptied and identifies materials that cannot be recycled. Lambeth Council | Follow the notice; the communal bin should not be used while it awaits collection. |
| Maidstone recycling bin | The crew did not empty the bin because recycling was contaminated. Maidstone Borough Council | Remove the contamination and put the bin out on the next scheduled collection. |
| South Waikato recycling bin | In the council’s staged system, a red sticker follows repeated contamination. South Waikato District Council | The council says a letter explains that recycling collection will be suspended for 12 weeks. |
| Cheltenham recycling bin | The recycling was unsorted and was not taken. Cheltenham Borough Council | Sort the materials and follow the council’s local instructions for arranging collection. |
| Hutt City recycling bin | The recycling may be contaminated, or the bin may be too heavy for the truck to lift. Hutt City Council | Check the stated reason; the sticker does not necessarily indicate contamination. |
| Denbighshire communal recycling bin | A red sticker identifies a mixed metals, plastics, and cartons stream on a black bin. Denbighshire County Council | Use the bin for the materials shown on its label. |
| Reading general-waste bin | The sticker reminds residents that food waste does not belong in general waste. Reading Borough Council | Put food waste in the locally designated food-waste collection instead. |
What to do if your bin has a red sticker
- Read the entire sticker. Look for the reason, item list, checked boxes, contact details, and collection instructions.
- Identify who issued it. Check the council or waste provider named on the sticker, then use that authority’s current bin guidance. Rules from another area may not apply to your collection.
- Follow the specific remedy. If it identifies contamination or unsorted items, sort the bin as directed. Do not assume it will be collected later or that another council’s re-presentation procedure applies.
- Ask if the instruction is unclear. Contact the service named on the sticker or your local council rather than guessing from the color.
Why the local instructions matter
A red sticker can mark anything from a one-time missed collection to a formal warning or a label for an accepted recycling stream. Even where contamination is the issue, the remedy differs: Maidstone directs residents to remove it and present the bin on the next scheduled collection, while Cheltenham gives its own sorting and collection instructions. South Waikato’s 12-week suspension is specific to that council’s staged policy, not a standard consequence elsewhere.
Maidstone Borough Council reported in 2023 that contamination of recycling loads in Maidstone cost taxpayers across Kent £25,000 in the preceding two months. That is the council’s reported local amount and period, not a general estimate of contamination costs.
