A Microsoft Office “lifetime license” usually means a one-time purchase of a specific Office release, not a perpetual entitlement to every version Microsoft will publish. For consumers, the current one-time purchase is Office 2024. It installs on one PC or Mac, includes the applications named for the edition you buy, and can run offline after installation and activation. It does not include Microsoft 365 subscription services, continuous feature upgrades, or a guarantee of lifetime support.
The practical choice is therefore between a fixed Office 2024 license for one computer and a Microsoft 365 subscription that supplies current applications and online services. The right option depends on how many devices you use, whether you need Outlook or cloud services, and whether predictable one-time ownership matters more than ongoing upgrades.
What “lifetime license” means in Microsoft’s Office lineup
“Lifetime license” is consumer shorthand. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase: you pay once for a named edition and receive that release for the licensed computer. The license does not automatically expand to later major releases. If Microsoft publishes a future version after Office 2024, obtaining it requires another purchase.
The word “lifetime” also does not mean that Microsoft will support the software forever or that activation can be completed once and forgotten. Office 2024 requires internet connectivity for installation, activation, periodic reactivation and updates. After it has been installed and activated, the desktop applications can be used without an internet connection, but a completely disconnected computer is not a supported use case.

Microsoft currently lists support for Office 2024 on PC and Mac as ending on October 9, 2029. That date is the clearest reason to treat “lifetime” as “the life of this product release and its support period,” rather than as a promise that the license lasts indefinitely.
Which Office 2024 editions are covered?
The edition name determines both the applications you receive and the permitted use. Check the exact product name and platform before buying; an application included in one suite should not be assumed to be included in another.

Office LTSC 2024 appears in Microsoft’s documentation but should not be treated as another name for Office Home 2024 or Home & Business 2024. Its deployment model, audience and included applications differ. If you need Outlook, the consumer edition that explicitly lists it is Office Home & Business 2024.

What the one-time purchase actually includes
The named desktop applications
You receive the classic desktop programs listed for your edition. Office Home 2024 supplies Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook to that same list. The purchase is tied to that release’s feature set rather than to an ever-changing subscription catalog.
Use on one licensed computer
Microsoft describes the consumer Office 2024 one-time purchase as being for one PC or Mac. That is a single-computer entitlement, not the multiple-device entitlement associated with Microsoft 365 subscriptions. If a household regularly switches among several computers, count those devices before choosing the one-time option.
Security updates for the supported release
Microsoft says Office 2024 receives security updates. Those updates protect the installed release; they do not turn Office 2024 into a continually evolving feature subscription. Microsoft’s current support table lists October 9, 2029 as the support end date for Office 2024 on PC and Mac.

Offline work after setup
Once installation and activation are complete, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook (where included) can be used offline. You can work with files stored on the computer and reconnect later for updates or activation checks. Offline capability is therefore a feature of day-to-day use, not an exemption from Microsoft’s connectivity requirements.

Microsoft 365 online services
A one-time Office 2024 purchase is not a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft specifically identifies OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint Online as subscription services that are not bundled with the one-time license. Cloud-backed features that depend on those services may also be unavailable.
You can still save documents locally or use a separate cloud-storage provider, but that separate service is not supplied by the Office 2024 license. Likewise, buying Office Home & Business 2024 for its Outlook application does not by itself provide Exchange Online mail hosting.
New features in future Office releases
The installed applications remain on the Office 2024 release track. Microsoft says security updates are included, while new features are not. A later major release is a separate purchase.

This distinction matters if you rely on features introduced after Office 2024. A subscription is designed to provide current application versions and ongoing updates; the one-time license is designed to keep the purchased release.

Unlimited device switching
The consumer license is for one PC or Mac. It is not the multi-device model Microsoft describes for Microsoft 365. Do not assume that installing the software on a second computer is covered simply because you own the first installation.
Permanent activation without internet
Internet access is required to install and activate Office 2024, and Microsoft says periodic internet access is required to keep it activated. Updates also require connectivity. Microsoft’s consumer materials do not specify one universal reactivation interval, so do not plan around an assumed number of days or months.
Lifetime technical support
The license does not guarantee support for the life of the buyer or the computer. Microsoft’s published end-of-support date for Office 2024 PC and Mac is October 9, 2029. After that point, the product should not be treated as having the same support commitment as a current release.

The following comparison focuses on the differences that affect a purchase decision. Subscription plan benefits, storage allowances and support terms can change, so verify the current Microsoft plan description before committing.

There is no universally cheaper choice. A one-time purchase avoids recurring charges but may require paying full price for each future major release. A subscription can spread cost over time and bundle services, but access to subscription benefits depends on keeping the subscription active.
How installation, activation and offline use work
- Confirm the edition and platform. Verify whether the product is Office Home 2024 or Home & Business 2024, and whether the license is for Windows PC or Mac. Check the application list if Outlook is important.
- Install while connected to the internet. Microsoft requires internet access for installation. Follow the installer supplied with the purchase and allow it to download the Office components.
- Complete activation. Activation also requires internet access. Use the sign-in or product-key process presented by Microsoft’s installer. Do not expect the applications to remain fully activated on a never-connected computer.
- Apply available updates. Office updates require connectivity. Security updates maintain the supported Office 2024 release; they do not add the feature stream of a later major version.
- Work offline when necessary. After activation, open and edit locally stored files without an active connection. Save work locally or to a separately configured storage service.
- Reconnect periodically. Microsoft requires periodic internet access for reactivation. Because the consumer documentation does not state one fixed interval, reconnect regularly rather than relying on a specific grace period.
This sequence explains why Office 2024 is suitable for occasional offline work but unsuitable for an environment that forbids all future internet access.

Questions to settle before you buy
Do you need Outlook?
If desktop Outlook is required for home or business use, Office Home & Business 2024 is the consumer one-time edition that lists it. Office Home 2024 lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote only.

How many computers will you use?
List every PC or Mac on which you expect to install Office. The consumer Office 2024 entitlement covers one computer, so a second device changes the calculation and may favor a plan designed for multiple devices.
Do you need Microsoft-hosted cloud services?
Choose the one-time purchase only if the absence of OneDrive, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and other subscription-backed features is acceptable. Local storage or a separately purchased cloud service can cover file storage, but it does not add Microsoft 365 services to the license.
Is a stable feature set preferable?
Office 2024 fits users who want a defined application release and security maintenance without paying for each month or year. It is a poor fit if receiving new Office features as Microsoft releases them is a primary requirement.
How long must the software remain supported?
Compare your planning horizon with October 9, 2029, Microsoft’s currently listed support end date for Office 2024 PC and Mac. A project or organization that must remain on a supported release beyond that date should account for a later upgrade purchase or another licensing model.
