8,000 Hz mouse polling means the mouse can report its position to the computer up to 8,000 times per second—one report every 0.125 milliseconds. That is a shorter wait between reports than 1,000 Hz polling, but it is not a measurement of total input lag and does not guarantee better aim or game performance. Whether you notice a benefit depends on the mouse, game, PC, display, and your own experience.

What does 8,000 Hz polling mean?

A mouse’s polling rate is how often it sends information, such as movement updates, to the computer. At 8,000 Hz, the nominal interval between reports is 0.125 milliseconds; at 1,000 Hz, it is 1 millisecond. Razer’s HyperPolling explanation gives those interval figures. Corsair likewise explains that 8,000 Hz sends data eight times as frequently as 1,000 Hz, a comparison of report frequency rather than an independent performance measurement (Corsair support).

The interval describes only the polling portion of the input path. It does not mean that a movement or click reaches the screen in 0.125 milliseconds. Input latency also involves the mouse’s sensor and electronics, the operating system, the game, rendering, and the display. NVIDIA’s latency overview discusses this broader system pipeline.

Can 8,000 Hz improve gaming performance?

A faster polling rate can reduce the time spent waiting for the next mouse report and provide more frequent movement updates. Those differences may matter more in a responsive setup with high frame and display refresh rates, where smaller timing differences are more relevant. But a shorter polling interval does not by itself establish that a player will aim better, react faster, or win more often.

Manufacturers promote high polling as a way to reduce latency. For example, Razer introduced the Viper 8KHz as a wired mouse supporting 8,000 Hz polling in its 2021 announcement. Such product claims describe the feature; they are not proof of a universal gaming-performance gain. The available evidence does not establish a controlled, universal improvement that applies to every player or setup.

What are the trade-offs?

System performance and frame stability

More frequent reports mean more USB communication for the system to handle. Logitech warns that extra USB traffic can affect system performance and may coincide with FPS drops in some cases (Logitech Support). If a high rate causes stutters or unstable frame rates, the lower polling setting may be the better choice for that setup.

Wireless battery life

On a wireless mouse, operating at a high polling rate may use more battery. The practical cost depends on the mouse and how it implements the feature; check the manufacturer’s documentation for your model rather than assuming all devices have the same battery impact. Logitech recommends testing different rates for smoothness and task needs (Logitech Support).

How to decide whether to use 8,000 Hz

Try it on your own system rather than treating the maximum number as a requirement. Compare rates in the same game and under similar conditions, paying attention to how movement feels and whether frame delivery remains stable.

  1. Confirm compatibility. You need a mouse that supports 8,000 Hz and lets you select that rate. A maximum specification on a different mouse does not enable the feature.
  2. Set a baseline. Use the rate you normally play with and note how the game feels and whether frame rates are stable.
  3. Test the higher rate in the same conditions. Keep the game, settings, and play situation as consistent as practical. Look for a difference that is useful to you, not merely a larger number in a specification.
  4. Lower the rate if needed. If you notice stutters, frame-rate problems, or unwanted battery drain, choose a lower supported setting and compare again.

Logitech also recommends testing polling rates to find what feels smoothest for the task (Logitech Support). A gaming mouse should not be chosen solely for its maximum polling rate: comfort, shape, sensor and click performance, stability, and battery needs matter too. For example, Razer’s Viper 8KHz is a wired mouse announced with support for true 8,000 Hz polling; its existence does not make the feature necessary for every player.
