To prove the source of funds for a crypto deposit, provide records that connect how you obtained the money or crypto with how it reached the receiving platform. Depending on the source, that may mean payslips and bank statements, an exchange withdrawal record, wallet transaction history, mining or staking records, or gift and inheritance documents. The receiving platform’s request is the controlling checklist; requirements vary by platform and jurisdiction.
What your documents need to show
A strong submission tells a coherent story from origin to deposit. Some documents establish the source, while others establish that you received the funds or transferred the crypto. If one record does not show both, submit linked records.
- Origin: how the funds or crypto were earned, purchased, sold, gifted, inherited, or generated.
- Receipt: evidence that the money or crypto reached your bank account, exchange account, or wallet.
- Transfer path: evidence connecting that account or wallet to the deposit being reviewed.
For example, a payslip may show income but not that you used it to buy the deposited crypto. Pair it with the bank record showing the salary receipt and, if needed, the exchange or wallet records showing the subsequent purchase and transfer. Kraken notes that a separate bank or exchange statement may be necessary when an earning document does not prove receipt (Kraken’s source-of-funds guidance).
Documents to use for each source
Choose records that fit the actual origin of the deposit. These are examples, not a universal acceptance checklist.

| Source | Useful documents | What the records should connect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary or employment | Payslips, tax documents, employer confirmation, and bank statements | Employment or income to receipt in your bank, then to the crypto purchase or transfer. |
| Business income | Financial statements, tax or sales records, invoices, and statements showing payment | Business activity to revenue received, then to the crypto purchase or transfer. |
| Investment or asset sale | Broker or investment statements, sale confirmation, bank statement showing proceeds, and relevant exchange or broker records for crypto investments | Sale or investment proceeds to receipt, then to the crypto purchase or transfer. |
| Another exchange or hosted wallet | Sending exchange statement or transaction records identifying your account and the relevant withdrawal, wallet address, or transfer | Your account at the sending service to the withdrawal and onward deposit. |
| Your own external or unhosted wallet | Wallet transaction statement or export, or clear screenshots showing dates, asset, amounts, and wallet address; original purchase or other source evidence if requested | Original acquisition or other source through wallet activity to the deposit. |
| Mining | Mining payout statements or other records showing rewards; records identifying you or the equipment if requested | Mining activity and rewards through the wallet to the deposit. |
| Staking or crypto lending | Staking-pool, lending-platform, or wallet statements showing the activity and receipt of rewards or income | Service or activity to reward receipt and onward transfer. |
| Gift or donation | Donor letter, affidavit, or transfer document, plus a bank or wallet record showing receipt | Donor and source to your receipt, then to the crypto purchase or transfer. |
| Inheritance | Probate or other legal transfer documents, plus records showing receipt and onward use | Inheritance to receipt or asset transfer and then to the deposit. |
| Another source | Official records explaining the source and showing receipt; ask the platform what it needs for an unusual source | The claimed source to receipt and then to the deposit. |
Coinbase distinguishes evidence of the means of transfer from evidence of source of wealth, while Kraken notes that source and receipt may require separate records (Coinbase’s document examples; Kraken’s guidance).
What to provide for common crypto transfer paths
Crypto sent from another exchange
Use the sending exchange’s statement or transaction record. The useful record should identify your account and the withdrawal or transfer relevant to the deposit, including the wallet address or other transaction details where available. This helps connect the account you control to the funds sent to the receiving platform.

Crypto sent from your own wallet
Provide wallet transaction history rather than relying on a balance display. A transaction export, statement, or clear screenshots can show flows, dates, assets, amounts, and addresses. If the records show only movement between wallets, the platform may also ask how you originally acquired the crypto, such as a purchase record or tax document. Coinbase’s examples for external-wallet crypto include wallet activity and evidence identifying the original source.
Crypto earned through mining, staking, or lending
Use records from the activity or service that generated the crypto, together with wallet records showing receipt and onward movement. A wallet transaction alone may show an incoming reward but not explain the activity that produced it.

Crypto received as a gift or inheritance
Combine evidence explaining the transfer—such as donor or legal documentation—with the bank or wallet record that shows you received it. Then include the relevant purchase or transfer records connecting receipt to the deposit.
Source of funds and source of wealth are different
Source of funds (SoF) concerns where the money or assets in a particular transaction came from. Source of wealth (SoW) concerns how you accumulated your broader financial position over time. A platform may ask for one or both. A general wealth document does not, by itself, establish that the specific crypto deposited came from that wealth. Kraken and OKX Europe explain the distinction in their guidance (Kraken; OKX Europe).

How to make the submission clear
- Keep your name or other requested account identifier and the issuing bank, exchange, employer, or service visible.
- Show relevant dates, asset or currency, amounts, and wallet addresses.
- Use complete, legible statements or exports. Follow the receiving platform’s instructions for date ranges, file formats, and permitted redactions.
- If the chain includes a wallet or account change, explain the gap briefly and factually, and attach records that support the explanation.
- Do not rely on a balance screenshot alone to explain acquisition. Deribit likewise cautions that a portfolio display without information about profits or source may not qualify (Deribit’s document guidance).
A crypto tax report may help organize transaction history and can be a supporting record, but it does not replace evidence of source or guarantee acceptance. Coinbase lists tax documents and capital-gains or losses reports generated by crypto tax software among possible supporting records for crypto held in an external wallet (Coinbase).
Follow the receiving platform’s request
There is no single document set that every exchange must accept. Platforms may ask for different records based on the source, the transaction, the jurisdiction, and the customer’s circumstances. Crypto.com, for example, instructs users to provide complete documents and clear transaction details (Crypto.com’s source-of-funds guidance). Check the exact request you received before submitting, and ask the platform what evidence it needs if your source does not fit its listed examples.
