An upscaler converts a retro console’s video signal into a format a modern TV or monitor can display. Scanlines are an optional effect that imitates the look of a CRT, while input lag is the delay before a button press appears on screen. The scaler is only one part of that delay: the display can add processing time too.
What does an upscaler do for retro gaming?
Older consoles often output analog video in low-resolution modes such as 240p or 480i. A modern flat-panel display may not accept those signals directly, or may handle them poorly. A scaler samples or digitizes the console’s signal and converts it to a digital output mode the display supports.
“Upscaling” can describe several kinds of processing, not just increasing the number of pixels. Depending on the device, it may involve sampling, scaling, buffering, deinterlacing, filtering, or CRT-style effects. A line multiplier, for example, repeats scanlines to create a higher output mode; that is a different processing design from a fully buffered scaler.
Check the signal path before choosing a device
Compatibility depends on both ends of the connection: the console’s video output and the scaler’s supported inputs, as well as the output modes accepted by the display. Scalers may accept composite, S-Video, component, RGB, or SCART inputs, but not every model accepts every format. The RetroTINK-5X Pro specifications, for instance, list several analog inputs and digital output modes.

- Identify the console’s available output and the cable or adapter it requires.
- Confirm that the scaler accepts that signal format.
- Check that the scaler’s output mode is supported by the TV or monitor.
- For the best image quality available from a given console, compare its compatible signal options. RetroTINK warns that composite video gives lower-quality results than S-Video, component, or RGB.
Cable type is console-specific: a cable that provides RGB or component for one system may not be suitable for another. Check the console and scaler documentation rather than assuming one cable works across systems.
What are scanlines?
In retro gaming, scanlines usually means the dark or blank horizontal intervals associated with how low-resolution images appeared on CRT televisions. A scaler can imitate that appearance by darkening selected lines or applying other CRT-style effects to a digitally scaled picture. Scanlines are an optional visual preference, not a requirement for correct operation.
The OSSC Pro Quick Start Guide notes that scanlines on actual CRTs varied considerably and recommends adjusting simulated strength to taste. The right setting depends on the scaler, output resolution, display, and personal preference. Some scaling modes can add scanlines themselves; if you also enable post-processing scanlines, the effects may stack and make the picture darker than intended.

Does an upscaler add input lag?
Input lag is the delay between an action—such as pressing a controller button—and its visible result. The scaler can contribute to that delay, but the TV or monitor may add processing of its own. A scaler’s latency specification therefore is not the same as a measured controller-to-screen delay for every console, display, and setting.

These are the manufacturer’s scaler figures, not independent measurements of the full console-to-display chain. The maker also says its motion-adaptive deinterlacing has no additional lag penalty; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result.
The OSSC project manual for firmware 0.50 describes “very low latency (less than 2 input scanlines).” That figure belongs to legacy OSSC manual documentation and should not be treated as a universal measurement for other scaler models or the complete signal chain.

How to investigate sluggish controls
- Enable the display’s Game Mode, if available, and turn off optional image processing that you do not need.
- Keep the console, game, display, scaler mode, and cables consistent while comparing settings; changing several things at once makes the result hard to interpret.
- Compare the same game and action across the settings you are evaluating. This is a practical diagnostic, not a controlled measurement of a particular TV.
There is no universal total-latency figure that applies to every combination of console, scaler, display, and settings. Display processing is part of the result, so a scaler specification alone cannot settle whether a particular setup will feel responsive.

Some later retro consoles output interlaced modes, which require different handling from progressive 240p. Deinterlacing combines or processes fields to produce a progressive image, and different approaches can involve different trade-offs.

How to compare retro gaming setups
No one scaler is universally best. A simple line multiplier may suit someone prioritizing a low-complexity path, while another player may need composite input, motion-adaptive deinterlacing, flexible scaling, or more extensive CRT simulation. Compare the features that affect your actual console and display:
- Inputs: Does the scaler accept the console’s video format?
- Output: Does the display support the scaler’s output modes?
- Source mode: Is the console output progressive or interlaced, and how does the scaler handle it?
- Latency: What processing does the scaler perform, and what processing does the display add?
- Image options: Are scanlines, masks, or other CRT-style effects adjustable?
- Signal quality: Which cable and video format does the console support, and what quality trade-offs come with them?
Product prices, stock, firmware, and model lineups change. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and console-specific compatibility before buying. RetroTINK’s site has announced a 6X CE and firmware 4.0 for the RT5X; those announcements show that products and firmware can change, not that performance has been independently validated.
