An Amazon Echo’s light color is only part of the message: the pattern—such as pulsing, moving, or cycling—and the device type help identify what it is doing. On many ring-style Echo speakers, blue relates to listening or responding, yellow to a notification, green to a call, red to a muted microphone, and orange to setup. Purple and white have more than one meaning, so check the animation as well as the color.
Read the light by color, pattern, and device
Amazon’s Alexa Developers describe the following patterns for light-ring illustrations. Treat this as a general guide, not a guarantee that every Echo model displays every state in the same way. Amazon also provides separate instructions for screen devices, Echo Auto, and its 2025 Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio models.

This mapping comes from Amazon’s Alexa Developers Light Ring guide. The motion distinctions matter: for example, Amazon assigns different meanings to quickly and slowly pulsing purple.
How meanings differ by Echo type
Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio (2025 release)
For these specifically named 2025 models, Amazon’s Alexa+ help describes blue indicators for listening, processing, and Alexa speaking; yellow for a pending or unread notification; green for incoming or active calls; and red when the microphone on/off button is pressed. A brief purple light after Alexa speaks indicates that Do Not Disturb is on. Echo devices with a screen
On screen-equipped Echo devices, Amazon describes a pulsing blue light at the bottom of the screen while Alexa listens and a blue wave moving from left to right while it processes a request. Red means the camera and microphones are turned off; green appears during a call or Drop In. Do Not Disturb is shown with a crescent-moon icon. These are screen indicators, not a ring-color chart. Echo Auto
Echo Auto has its own indicator patterns. Amazon says cyan on blue means Alexa is listening, while cyan moving toward the center means the request is being processed. Side-to-side motion can indicate startup or waiting for Bluetooth. Red means the microphone is off; orange indicates setup or an attempt to connect to the internet; green relates to a call or message in progress or incoming; and yellow indicates a new notification. Purple may indicate setup failure during initial setup. Consult Amazon’s Echo Auto light-indicator guide if that is your device.

What to check if Alexa is not responding
A light by itself does not establish that an Echo has failed. Amazon recommends checking basic power, connection, mute, and placement issues:
- Use the power adapter supplied with the device and confirm it is plugged in.
- Check that the device has an active internet connection and verify its Wi-Fi connection.
- Look for a red mute indicator. Amazon Customer Service notes, “The light indicator is red when your device is muted.” If muted, press the microphone button to turn the microphone back on.
- On a speaker, press the Action button to see whether the device responds.
- Move the Echo away from walls, other speakers, or background noise that could interfere with hearing your request.
- Unplug the device, reconnect it, and check again.
These are Amazon’s first troubleshooting checks in Alexa Doesn’t Understand or Respond to Your Request. If the pattern still does not match, identify the model and use its specific Amazon help page; indicator behavior can vary by device and software.
