WhatsApp’s symbols beside a message show where that message is in the sending process: still waiting on your phone, accepted by WhatsApp, delivered to the other device, or read. The most important distinction is between delivered and read.
This guide covers WhatsApp’s documented message-status symbols, including why a missing blue check does not necessarily mean what you might assume.
WhatsApp message symbols at a glance

What the clock symbol means
A clock beside a message means WhatsApp has not completed sending it from your device. The usual cause is that your phone has no usable internet connection, even if the Wi-Fi symbol appears in the phone’s status bar.
Because the message has not completed the sending stage, the clock is different from one gray check. Do not interpret it as “the other person has not received it yet”; WhatsApp has not necessarily accepted it for delivery at all.

What to try when a clock remains visible
- Open another website or app that uses the internet to test whether the connection actually works.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Return to the WhatsApp chat and wait for the message to change to a check mark.
- If the message still shows a clock, avoid assuming it was sent. Send it again only after checking whether the original message eventually changes status, so you do not create a duplicate.
What one gray check means
One gray check means the message was sent to WhatsApp’s servers but has not been delivered to the recipient’s device. The recipient’s phone may be switched off, offline, or temporarily unable to connect.
A single gray check is therefore not proof that you have been blocked. Blocking is only one possible explanation people often jump to; the same symbol appears when the other phone is powered down or has no working connection.
If the check remains gray for a long time, you can check whether the problem is specific to this contact. Send a normal message to another contact who is likely online. A one-check result for one person does not establish the reason by itself, and a temporary network problem can affect either side.
What two gray checks mean
Two gray checks mean WhatsApp delivered the message to the recipient’s device. They do not mean the recipient opened the chat, viewed the message, or understood it.

This is the status that causes the most confusion. Delivery is a technical event: the message reached the other device. Reading is a separate event represented by blue checks when read receipts are available.
What two blue checks mean
Two blue checks mean the message was read, provided read receipts are available for that conversation. In a one-to-one chat, blue checks may be absent because either you or the other person has disabled read receipts.
In a group chat, blue checks appear only after all group members have read the message. Two gray checks in a group therefore mean the message reached the members’ devices, not that everyone has seen it.
Why a delivered message has no blue checks
There are several valid explanations:
- The recipient has not read the message.
- Read receipts are disabled in the conversation.
- You have disabled read receipts, which also prevents ordinary one-to-one read receipts from displaying.
- The chat is a group and not every member has read the message.
Consequently, a missing blue check is not conclusive proof that someone ignored the message. It also cannot reliably tell you whether the recipient briefly opened the chat when read receipts were unavailable.

How to change read receipts
On both Android and iPhone, use this path:
WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Read receipts
The setting applies to read receipts for individual chats. It does not remove read receipts from group chats, and it does not disable voice-message play receipts.
Changing the setting is not a way to hide delivery. Other people can still see the delivery state represented by the gray checks. The setting concerns ordinary read status, not whether WhatsApp received or delivered the message.
Voice messages: the blue microphone checks
Voice messages use a related but distinct status. Blue checks alongside a voice message indicate that it was played. This is a play receipt rather than the ordinary text-message read receipt, and it cannot be disabled in the same way as ordinary read receipts.
That means turning off Read receipts should not be treated as a universal “no one can see what I opened or played” switch. Voice-message play status follows its own behavior.

Common mistakes when reading WhatsApp symbols

What this guide does not identify
WhatsApp has many other interface icons for features such as attachments, calls, status updates, linked devices, message information, disappearing messages, encryption, and pinned or starred messages. Their appearance and placement can vary by device and app version.
The current official Help Center material used for this guide documents the message-status and read-receipt behavior above, but it does not provide a comprehensive, current legend for every WhatsApp icon. For that reason, an unfamiliar toolbar or feature symbol should not be assigned a meaning merely because it resembles one of the message-status marks.

Does one gray check mean I have been blocked?
No. One gray check means the message reached WhatsApp’s servers but has not been delivered to the recipient’s device. The recipient may be offline, have a switched-off phone, or be unable to connect. It is not conclusive evidence of blocking.

The recipient may not have read the message, read receipts may be disabled by either participant in an individual chat, or the message may be in a group where not every member has read it.
