Startup pitch competition judges commonly assess the customer problem and proposed solution, the market and competition, the business model, evidence of execution, the team, and the quality of the presentation and Q&A. Some events add impact, traction, product-market fit, or scaling. The actual criteria and their weights vary, so prepare against the competition’s current rubric rather than treating any general checklist as its official scorecard.
What judges commonly evaluate
Problem, customer, and solution
Judges want to understand who has the problem, why it matters, and how the proposed product or service creates value. The U.S. Department of Energy’s rubric asks about the market problem, customer need, and customer value proposition. Novus’s rubric also considers the identified problem and opportunity, solution effectiveness, customer research and segmentation, and whether credible research supports the pitch.
Market, competition, and differentiation
Explain the target market and the alternatives customers can choose today, including doing nothing where relevant. Then show what makes your offer meaningfully different and valuable. Harvard Business School’s 2026 Rock Business Track includes market size, competitive landscape, and differentiation in its customer-value assessment; the University of Vermont’s 2026 rubric scores industry, target customer, and competition.
Business model and route to market
A compelling idea still needs a plausible path to customers and revenue. Be ready to explain how the venture earns money, how it will reach buyers, and what resources it needs. Harvard Business School lists the economic model and go-to-market plan; the DOE criteria include market segment, business model, and potential financial needs. UVM also considers marketing, operations, management, and financial and non-financial resource planning.

Evidence of execution and potential
Separate what the venture has done from what it hopes to do. Novus’s criteria include an MVP demonstration, key metrics, financial status or projections, and potential to achieve product-market fit. Hult Prize uses criteria that change as teams advance: its universal scorecard covers team, idea, impact, and business, while product-market fit and go-to-market strategy appear at Nationals, traction at Incubator, and scaling at Finals.
Make the evidence legible: a customer interview is not the same as a paying customer, a prototype is not a launched product, and a forecast is not a result. Label assumptions and describe what supports them.

Team capability
Judges may assess whether the team has the commitment, relevant capabilities, and organization to execute. Hult Prize asks whether the team is committed, diverse, organized, clear about roles, and able to work well together. Harvard Business School includes team capabilities and background.
Presentation and Q&A
Some competitions score delivery separately from the business case. UVM’s 2026 rubric names storytelling, energy, confidence, creativity, verbal and non-verbal communication, and staying within the time limit. The DOE rubric includes presentation quality; UVM and Novus explicitly assess Q&A. Clear delivery helps judges follow your case, but it does not replace evidence for it.

Why one competition’s scorecard may not fit another
Events differ in both their priorities and their evaluation systems. Harvard Business School describes an investment-potential lens for a high-growth, profit-oriented business track. Hult Prize includes alignment with at least one UN Sustainable Development Goal and adds criteria as teams advance. The DOE-wide rubric assigns distinct weights to its criteria. These are examples of different event-specific approaches, not a single universal standard.
The Pitch Competition Standards Council’s 2026 standard proposes weighted criteria, independent scoring, and criterion-level feedback. That is the council’s proposed standard, not a rule adopted by every competition. Check the organizer’s current rules for the scorecard that actually applies.

How to prepare against the rubric
- Get the current rules. Find the event’s latest judging rubric, weights, pitch format, time limit, and Q&A details before shaping the presentation. A generic checklist or practice score cannot predict how a specific panel will score you.
- Map each criterion to a clear answer. Make sure your pitch addresses the customer, problem, value, market, alternatives, revenue model, customer acquisition, team, and funding or resource needs where the rubric asks for them.
- Support claims with appropriate evidence. Use customer research to substantiate the problem, a demonstration or test for product claims, and clearly labeled assumptions for forecasts. Distinguish completed milestones from plans.
- Prepare for the event’s format. Rehearse to the stated time limit and prepare concise answers to likely questions about customers, competition, pricing or revenue, execution, and resource needs. A Novus event guide specified a 10-minute pitch and 5-minute Q&A; those timings are an example, not a universal format. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s page, dated July 29, 2019, gave 10-minute pitches and 5-minute Q&A at LBNL events, and 20-minute pitches and 10-minute Q&A at DOE-wide events. Check current instructions rather than relying on older examples.
A practical way to review your pitch
Before presenting, use the event’s published criteria as the controlling checklist. For a quick internal review, consider whether a judge can identify the customer and problem, understand why the solution is distinct, see a plausible business model and route to market, distinguish evidence from projections, assess the team’s ability to execute, and follow the presentation and answers. Treat impact, traction, product-market fit, or scaling as required only when the event’s rubric or stage calls for them. This review framework synthesizes recurring categories in published rubrics; it is not an official universal scorecard.
