It uses the frame’s color, motion vectors and other engine data to add learned lighting and material detail—such as softer skin shading, light through hair or foliage, contact shadows and reflections. It is not an upscaler or a frame-generation feature, and its visual effect depends on how a game developer implements and tunes it.
What changes in the image
DLSS 5 works on a frame the game has already rendered, using image information and renderer data to influence how objects and lighting appear in the final displayed image. NVIDIA describes the system as using color and motion vectors, with temporal state and artistic-direction values among the conditioning inputs described in its research material. It runs inside the game’s graphics pipeline rather than starting from a text prompt or creating an entire scene independently. (NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 overview; NVIDIA ADLR’s technical description)
The intended change is richer, more detailed light-and-material interaction. NVIDIA points to effects including subsurface scattering in skin, light passing through hair and foliage, more pronounced contact shadows and reflections, and broader lighting or color responses. In practice, the frame’s appearance can change even though the underlying game scene and geometry are still rendered by the game.
How DLSS 5 differs from Super Resolution and Frame Generation
The DLSS label covers distinct techniques. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from rendered scene data. Frame Generation creates additional frames. DLSS 5 instead adds learned appearance details to the final image through neural rendering. It should not be treated as another name for upscaling, nor does its visual-processing role by itself establish a frame-rate increase. (NVIDIA; NVIDIA’s launch announcement)

Who controls the result
Developer controls
NVIDIA says developers can choose models, use different models for different scenes, and tune two controls. Structure Intensity adjusts finer details such as ambient occlusion, reflections and subsurface scattering; Tone Intensity adjusts broader lighting and color responses. These controls give developers ways to shape the effect, but they do not guarantee that every implementation will preserve the look every player prefers. (NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 overview)
Player choice and the art-direction debate
NVIDIA says games implementing DLSS 5 will give players an on/off option. The debate is about more than whether the technique uses AI: announcement footage drew criticism from viewers who felt it changed intended lighting or character features, while NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang defended the technology and emphasized developers’ ability to fine-tune it. Whether the result suits a particular game is therefore a matter to judge in that game, not from the feature name alone. (NVIDIA; Associated Press)

What you need to use it
Local DLSS 5 operation requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU, and the game must also integrate the feature. Having the required GPU alone does not add DLSS 5 to an unsupported title. NVIDIA describes a real-time target of up to 4K, not a guarantee that every game or configuration will achieve that target. Support and implementation status can change as games and drivers are updated. (NVIDIA ADLR; NVIDIA)
For example, NVIDIA announced an implementation in NBA 2K27. PC Gamer reported that the game’s graphics options call it “DLSS Neural Rendering.” The label may vary by game, so check the specific title’s graphics settings and support notes. (NVIDIA’s announcement; PC Gamer)

What is known about performance cost
“Real time” describes how DLSS 5 is intended to operate; it is not a universal frame-rate guarantee. PC Gamer reported that NVIDIA claimed a 50–60% performance hit, and that the outlet’s early NBA 2K27 testing saw a drop of up to 73% on an RTX 5080 at some settings. Those figures apply to the report and its specific early test context, not to every game, graphics card or configuration. The available reporting does not establish a broadly representative independent benchmark set, so compare performance in the title and settings you actually use. (PC Gamer)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to turn it on
- Compare the same scene with the feature on and off, paying attention to faces, hair, foliage, shadows, reflections and the overall lighting.
- Consider whether the changed appearance fits the game’s art direction; a more detailed or realistic-looking effect is not automatically a better match.
- If the game exposes DLSS 5 controls, adjust Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity separately to see which kinds of changes matter to you.
- Check frame rate in your own game and settings before deciding whether the visual change is worth its performance cost.
Huang called DLSS 5 “the GPT moment for graphics,” a promotional characterization of NVIDIA’s ambitions rather than an independent assessment of image quality. The practical question for players remains whether the effect improves the particular game they are playing. (NVIDIA Investor Relations)
