There was no single menu or hunting method shared by all small Jurassic predators. For some small theropods, anatomy makes insects and small vertebrates plausible prey; fossils can also preserve feeding traces. But teeth and body shape suggest possibilities rather than documenting a complete diet or a specific hunt.

What evidence tells us what they ate?

Evidence varies in how directly it connects an animal to a meal. Preserved gut contents can identify food more directly than a tooth’s shape. Bite marks show feeding contact, but usually do not establish whether the marked animal was killed by the trace-maker or eaten after it died.

  • Gut contents: Prey preserved in a fossil’s digestive tract can offer direct evidence, but the conclusion applies to that specimen—not automatically to every member of its species or to small predators generally.
  • Teeth and anatomy: These can indicate what kinds of food an animal may have handled. They support dietary hypotheses, not a complete menu.
  • Bite marks: These document feeding interactions. Scavenging is an alternative to a fresh kill, and identifying the animal that made a mark can be difficult.

The Australian Museum notes that bite marks and gut contents can preserve evidence of feeding interactions in its overview of dinosaur attacks.

What might small predators have eaten?

Archaeopteryx: insects and other small prey are plausible

The Australian Museum describes Archaeopteryx as having small jaws and sharp teeth compatible with eating insects. Those teeth could also have caught small lizards, fish, and mammals, so an insect-only diet is not established. The anatomy points to plausible prey, not a witnessed meal or an exclusive menu. See the museum’s discussion of carnivore teeth and diet.

Troodontids: evidence for varied diets, not a universal Jurassic menu

A 2026 synthesis abstract reports varied diets among troodontid dinosaurs, with stomach contents and gastric pellets supporting ingestion of both plant and animal material. Troodontids span the Jurassic and Cretaceous; this broad finding does not show that every small Jurassic predator—or every troodontid—was omnivorous. The abstract is indexed by PubMed.

How did they hunt?

The available anatomical evidence can suggest movement without revealing a precise attack sequence. The Australian Museum associates Coelophysis’s slender, lightweight skeleton and long tail with speed and agility. That supports a cautious inference about locomotion; it does not prove whether the animal chased, ambushed, hunted in a pack, or used a particular prey-capture technique.

More generally, a body suited to agility may be consistent with active pursuit or quick attacks, but body form alone cannot establish tactics. A fossil bite mark can show that feeding occurred, yet it may represent scavenging rather than a successful hunt.

What do bite-mark counts show?

In a 2020 survey of the Upper Jurassic Mygatt-Moore Quarry, Drumheller and colleagues found at least one theropod bite mark on 684 of 2,368 fossils—28.885% of the surveyed fossils. The authors discuss feeding, scavenging, and possible cannibalism, while noting the difficulty of identifying the trace-maker. This is a statistic about that quarry’s fossil assemblage, not the share of small predators that hunted successfully or a general rate for dinosaurs. Read the study in PLOS One.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Small Jurassic predators were not necessarily ecologically alike, so one diet or hunting style should not be assigned to the whole group.
  • Insects and small vertebrates are plausible prey for some small theropods, but tooth shape does not prove an exclusive diet.
  • Direct evidence such as gut contents can be more informative about a meal than anatomy, while its scope remains limited to the specimen and evidence documented.
  • Body form can support a cautious inference about locomotion, not a detailed account of hunting tactics.
  • Bite marks record feeding contact more clearly than they distinguish killing from scavenging.
