For NASA flight-director roles, the stated baseline is U.S. citizenship, a bachelor’s degree in one of five eligible fields, and substantial related professional experience that includes time-critical decisions in high-stress, high-risk settings. NASA does not publish a minimum number of years or require previous flight-controller experience. Flight operations also includes work beyond flight directing, so the best preparation depends on the role you want.
What NASA requires for a flight-director application
NASA’s current flight-director vacancy and FAQ identify these baseline qualifications:
- Citizenship: U.S. citizenship.
- Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. NASA’s current FAQ does not state that a master’s degree or doctorate is required.
- Professional experience: Substantial, related, progressively responsible experience, including time-critical decision-making in high-stress, high-risk environments. NASA’s published summary does not give a minimum number of years.

These are practical ways to connect your background to NASA’s stated criteria, not a published scoring rubric. NASA has not ranked majors or career paths as better than others.
Is flight-controller experience required?
No. NASA says prior flight-controller experience is not a prerequisite to apply, although it is a common background among flight directors. A flight-control role can provide direct experience with mission operations, spacecraft systems, and team decision-making, but relevant experience can also come from other technical and operational work.

Profiles of NASA’s 2021 flight-director class illustrate varied paths, including flight-control and mission-support work, spacecraft propulsion and systems, safety and mission assurance, crew-training systems, operational integration, and flight-controller training and certification. How students can build relevant experience
NASA Pathways offers students multi-semester developmental work aligned with academic or career interests. Its program describes valued strengths such as teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and applying technology. What happens after selection?
NASA provides technical instruction across spacecraft systems, extensive simulations, on-the-job training, and mentoring from senior flight directors. Initial certification can take up to 16 months, according to NASA’s current flight-director FAQ. The role is based at Johnson Space Center in Houston and involves leading real-time mission execution and risk management with flight controllers, astronauts, and commercial and international partners.
The current vacancy says selected flight directors will lead missions to the International Space Station and Artemis, with future human missions to Mars also in scope. NASA Chief Flight Director Emily Nelson described the work as integration across disciplines: “Accomplishing these ambitious goals requires flight directors who are expert integrators, bringing together a broad range of teams and disciplines into a clear, unified mission effort.” Read NASA’s announcement about the flight-director vacancy.
