Copilot in Edge may use your prompt, recent conversation history and browsing context, depending on what you ask. That context can include a page’s URL, title or content, open tabs, and browsing history. A separate feature, Browse with Copilot, can interact with webpages and has additional access and screenshot-retention rules. Microsoft’s descriptions of these two features are different, so their data practices should not be treated as one list.
What ordinary Copilot in Edge may use
Microsoft says Edge selects browsing information according to your request. If you ask Copilot to summarize or discuss a page, it may use the current webpage, its title, open tabs, and browsing history. If your request does not refer to page content, Microsoft says Edge uses no information beyond the URL, page title, prompt, and previous conversation history. See Microsoft’s Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft’s How Context Clues work in Copilot in Edge lists the possible browsing context as:
- URL
- Page title
- Page content or screenshots
- Browsing history
When Copilot opens, Edge may use open-tab titles and URLs to suggest prompts. Microsoft says Context Clues are not used to generate those suggestion tiles.

What Microsoft says is saved in conversation history
Microsoft says browsing context is not stored in Copilot conversation history; the prompt and Copilot’s response are. That statement is specifically about conversation history. It does not establish that browsing context is never processed, transmitted, or retained elsewhere.
The reviewed Microsoft pages do not establish a universal retention period for ordinary Copilot prompts and responses, or fully explain how retention differs between personal, work, school, and organizational accounts. Do not apply Browse with Copilot’s screenshot-retention period to ordinary Copilot chat.

How to stop ordinary Copilot from using browsing context
- In Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, or browsing history in responses. Suggestions and some answers may be less relevant. See Microsoft’s Context Clues instructions.
Microsoft says that on first use, users are informed or explicitly asked for permission before Edge information is used, depending on region, and that Edge remembers the preference. The reviewed documentation does not specify the regional consent rules.

Browse with Copilot is a separate, browser-action feature
Browse with Copilot can click, type, and navigate between tabs, either in the current tab or a new one. Microsoft says users can monitor its work, interrupt it, or take control. Its listed information access is broader than ordinary Copilot chat with Context Clues:
- Screenshots
- Limited Edge profile data
- Cookies
- Open tabs
- Site permissions
Microsoft says the feature cannot access saved passwords, autofill data, or wallet information. However, if a site is already signed in through cookies, Copilot may also be signed in. These details are in Microsoft’s Browse with Copilot in Microsoft Edge.

History, screenshots, and information typed into pages
For Browse with Copilot, Microsoft says prompts, responses, and a record of the work are saved in conversation history. Screenshots are saved with the conversation, are not used for training, and are deleted when the conversation is deleted; otherwise, they are retained for up to 30 days. This up-to-30-day period applies to screenshots captured by Browse with Copilot, not to ordinary Copilot chat generally.
Microsoft says information typed directly into a webpage is not saved by Copilot, although Edge itself may save it. The distinction matters: the feature’s conversation record and browser or website storage are not the same thing.

Availability and safety cautions
Microsoft describes Browse with Copilot as rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with other markets to follow. Availability and eligibility can change, so check Microsoft’s current feature page for your region and account.
Microsoft calls the feature experimental and warns it can misinterpret instructions or encounter malicious hidden instructions on webpages. It recommends supervising browser actions and cautions against using the feature for sensitive financial activity or with personal identifiers, medical records, or highly confidential information. Inaccessible saved passwords and autofill do not mean a page cannot expose other sensitive information while the feature is operating.
