Start with temperature and moisture, then collect the pressure, flow, leak-detection, and electrical measurements relevant to the installed equipment and the failure modes you want to detect. Validate readings and build equipment-specific baselines before relying on analytics; there is no universal sensor list, sampling interval, or alert threshold for every facility.
Which sensor data should a data center collect?
Choose measurements according to the asset, its operating conditions, and the failure modes under consideration. A broad stream of data is not automatically useful: readings must represent the equipment being monitored and be interpretable alongside its operating context.
Environmental conditions at IT equipment inlets
Measure temperature and moisture where they affect IT equipment, especially at equipment inlets. ASHRAE’s Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities explains that reliability depends in part on maintaining inlet conditions within applicable thermal guidance. For moisture monitoring, it recommends dew point: relative humidity changes with temperature, while dew point is more consistent across a data center.
Cooling-system condition and performance
For the cooling equipment and loops in scope, capture relevant supply and return temperatures and the pressure and flow measurements specified for those systems. Include leak detection where liquid cooling or water distribution makes leakage a credible failure risk. ASHRAE’s AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework identifies temperature, pressure, flow, and leak-detection sensors integrated with BMS or DCIM platforms as instrumentation examples.

Power-system telemetry
Collect real-time telemetry from the power devices relevant to the maintenance objective, including electrical power or energy measurements where they help reveal a change from baseline. Select points around the power assets that matter; the guidance does not imply that every facility needs every possible electrical measurement.
Asset and operating context
Store readings with the information needed to interpret them: asset identity and location, timestamps, operating state, relevant workload or load context, commissioning information, and maintenance events. Without that context, a change caused by normal operating conditions can be difficult to distinguish from a developing fault.

How do you make sensor data trustworthy?
Validate the measurements
ASHRAE’s Chapter 63: Smart Building Systems cautions: “In practice, sensors are subject to various defects; therefore, sensor data should not be used without validation.” Check calibration status, missing or implausible readings, timestamp quality, drift, and whether each sensor’s location represents the asset or condition it is meant to measure. Use commissioning checks and known operating conditions to identify errors before trusting the data for analytics.
Establish and refresh operating baselines
ASHRAE’s Operations and Maintenance | AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework recommends using commissioning and recommissioning results to establish operating baselines and validate analytics inputs. Refresh baselines after significant upgrades or other material changes, because an older operating pattern may no longer describe the equipment’s normal behavior.

Set limits for the equipment and operating mode
Set thresholds with reference to the relevant equipment, operating mode, applicable standards, and manufacturer limits. The framework describes deriving thresholds from telemetry to predict component failure, but does not prescribe a universal threshold or sampling rate. Treat environmental guidance as an operating envelope, not as a predictive-maintenance alarm threshold.
ASHRAE’s 2021 thermal guidelines, reproduced in its 2023 handbook, list recommended dry-bulb inlet ranges of 18–27°C for equipment classes A1–A4 and 18–22°C for class H1. The allowable ranges and humidity or dew-point constraints vary by class. Apply the current guidance and OEM specifications for the equipment actually installed rather than treating either recommended range as a universal facility target.

How should you plan sensor coverage?
Use these questions to assess a sensor plan or monitoring platform:
- Which assets and failure modes does it cover?
- Do sensor locations represent the IT equipment inlet, cooling circuit, or electrical asset being assessed?
- Are the measurement range, accuracy, calibration status, and validation process appropriate?
- Is sampling and trend resolution suitable for the equipment’s dynamics and the detection objective? Select these for the specific application rather than assuming one interval fits all.
- Can the system integrate with the site’s BMS or DCIM and preserve commissioning, operating-state, load, and maintenance context?
- Are thresholds tied to equipment-class guidance and manufacturer limits, with alarms connected to a documented procedure and human review?
These are planning criteria, not a claim that one sensor design or vendor is best for every data center. Keep documented procedures and human review in place for consequential maintenance decisions.
