It depends on what you mean by “pre-recorded live stream.” For an ordinary video-file upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. These are different workflows with different requirements.

Choose the workflow: upload a file or send a live feed

YouTube publishes recommended encoding settings for normal uploads and separate encoder settings for live ingestion. The upload recommendations are not a promise that every other format will be rejected; they are the settings YouTube recommends for that workflow. The live settings apply to a feed sent from an encoder, even if the footage being sent was recorded earlier.

Workflow Container or transport Video Audio Other relevant settings
Regular video upload MP4 recommended H.264 recommended AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio Progressive video; preserve the recorded frame rate; 48 kHz audio recommended; no edit lists; place the moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”).
Prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder RTMP/RTMPS H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 AAC or MP3 Up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); 2-second keyframe interval recommended, with a maximum of 4 seconds.
HDR live workflow RTMP(S) or HLS; YouTube’s HLS directions specify TS segments HEVC for HDR; 10-bit HDR configuration Depends on encoder and configuration HLS segment duration: 1–4 seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not support AV1 for HDR.

These values are from YouTube Help’s published upload encoding recommendations, live encoder settings, and HDR streaming guidance. The pages do not display publication dates, so check them again if your encoder’s available options or YouTube’s requirements have changed.

For a normal video upload: use MP4 with H.264

If you want to publish a prerecorded video as a standard YouTube video, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. YouTube recommends progressive video and matching the upload frame rate to the rate at which the footage was recorded; converting frame rates unnecessarily can introduce judder or duplicate frames.

  • Audio sample rate: 48 kHz recommended.
  • MP4 layout: avoid edit lists and put the moov atom at the beginning of the file, commonly called “Fast Start.”

Those are YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. They describe uploading a finished video; they do not turn that upload into a live broadcast.

For prerecorded footage delivered as a live stream: use an encoder feed

To have recorded footage appear in YouTube Live, play or loop the footage through a live encoder and send the encoder’s feed to YouTube. YouTube’s listed live protocols are RTMP and RTMPS, and its supported live video codecs include H.264, HEVC, and AV1. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3.

Set the encoder’s live parameters

  • Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Set a 2-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that setting. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • The published live encoder settings support up to 60 fps.
  • Configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. Your encoder’s codec therefore describes what you send to YouTube, not necessarily the codec every viewer receives. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and live stream settings instructions.

HDR is a separate live-streaming case

If the prerecorded material is HDR and you want to preserve HDR in the live broadcast, follow YouTube’s HDR configuration rather than assuming the standard SDR settings apply. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies HEVC and a 10-bit HDR configuration. For the HLS workflow, it specifies TS segments from 1 to 4 seconds; the encoder settings guidance does not list AV1 as supported for HDR.

HDR parameters depend on the encoder and signal configuration. Use YouTube’s dedicated HDR streaming instructions alongside the relevant live encoder setup, rather than treating HDR as just a different MP4 codec.

Send prerecorded footage to YouTube Live

  1. Decide whether you need a video upload or a live broadcast. Upload a finished file for a normal video page. Use an encoder feed when viewers should encounter the content as a live stream.
  2. Prepare the media for the selected path. For an upload, start with MP4/H.264 and one of the recommended audio codecs. For live ingestion, make sure the encoder can send RTMP/RTMPS using an accepted live codec and audio format.
  3. Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the stream URL and key.
  4. Enter the URL and key in the encoder. Keep the key private; it grants the ability to send a stream to the configured broadcast.
  5. Configure and test the feed. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), then check the YouTube preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame.
  6. Start the encoder and verify the live preview. Resolve any warnings or audio/video problems before sharing the live link with viewers.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its setup guidance does not make the same assurance for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Plan separately if you need a dependable recording of a longer broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common format and setup problems

  • An uploaded MP4 is not appearing as live. A file upload creates a regular video, not a live broadcast. Send the media through an encoder configured with the YouTube stream URL and key if the content needs to be live.
  • The encoder rejects the video codec. Confirm that the selected live workflow supports the codec: YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 for standard live encoder ingestion, but HDR has its own HEVC requirements.
  • The live feed has unstable delivery or warnings. Check that bitrate is constant and that keyframes are 2 seconds apart or no more than 4 seconds apart. Review YouTube’s bitrate and resolution recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you are sending.
  • Audio is missing or unsupported. Check that a normal upload uses one of YouTube’s recommended upload audio codecs and that live ingestion uses AAC or MP3; also confirm that the encoder is actually sending an audio track.
  • The stream will not connect. Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder and YouTube Studio. If the key was exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
  • The archive is missing after a long stream. YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not streams of 12 hours or more. Keep a local or separate recording if you need an archive beyond that limit.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running in the cloud

If the aim is continuous looping rather than a one-off broadcast, a cloud service can run the feed without leaving a home computer on. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for looping uploaded videos or playlists: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not need to remain on.

StreamNeo streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, for one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI is available alongside cards. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
