There is no universal cloud server size for electronic design automation (EDA). Size each part of the environment—compute, memory, storage, network, scheduling, licenses and security—for the specific tool, design and flow stage. The dependable way to choose an architecture is to profile representative jobs, verify the tool vendor’s supported configurations, and compare end-to-end performance and cost.
Which compute resources should an EDA cloud provide?
Different EDA jobs stress different resources. A simulation may benefit from many cores if the tool and workload scale across them; another task may depend more on fast individual cores, large memory capacity or storage performance. Cadence’s whitepaper puts the principle plainly: “Each EDA tool has a unique set of hardware configuration needs to run optimally.”
For each flow stage, establish whether the workload is serial, threaded or distributed, and how much it gains from additional cores. Compare processor generation and clock behavior, core count, peak memory use, and memory available per core. Also check how performance changes when jobs share a host or cluster. An instance with more cores is not automatically faster if the tool does not use them efficiently, or if memory or data access becomes the bottleneck.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) recommends selecting instance types to fit job requirements, including workloads with large or small memory footprints and storage needs that range from high IOPS to high throughput. Its semiconductor-design whitepaper gives an example of 100 compute servers and more than 2,000 CPU cores for a particular critical-IP gate-level simulation stage. That is an illustrative workload, not a general EDA baseline.

Physical verification can have especially large compute and memory demands. Synopsys describes sophisticated full-chip design-rule-checking (DRC) and layout-versus-schematic (LVS) jobs that can take several days and use hundreds or thousands of CPU cores to achieve a reasonable turnaround. In a Synopsys article whose publication date is not stated in the cited material, the AWS X2iezn example lists up to 4.5 GHz, 1.5 TB of memory, 32 GiB per vCPU, up to 48 vCPUs with 1,536 GiB of RAM, 100 Gbps networking and 19 Gbps of EBS bandwidth. Treat those as time-sensitive specifications for an example configuration—not a current, platform-wide recommendation or a benchmark for every EDA tool.
What to measure in a sizing pilot
- Runtime and peak memory for representative jobs and design sizes.
- CPU utilization and the performance gain, if any, from adding cores.
- Queue time as well as execution time, so an apparently fast instance does not hide scheduling delays.
- Failures, slowdowns and resource contention when jobs run alongside other workloads.
- Compatibility with the tool vendor’s supported operating systems and instance architectures.
How should EDA storage be sized?
Storage capacity alone does not determine whether a design flow will run well. Measure the active working set, concurrent users and jobs, metadata-operation rate, latency, IOPS and throughput. A shared filesystem that cannot serve data quickly enough can hold back a large compute cluster; AWS’s older EDA optimization whitepaper warns that centralized NFS filers can become constrained by space or bandwidth as data volumes and cluster sizes grow. The resulting longer runs can also increase license-related costs.
AWS’s 2020 EDA architecture article gives a shared-filesystem throughput range of 500 MB/sec to 10 GB/sec, varying with use case, design size and core count. This is AWS architecture guidance from 2020, not a universal target or a substitute for measuring a particular workload. The appropriate capacity and performance depend on how jobs access their data and how many jobs access it at once.

Separate persistent data from active working data
Keep durable source and reference material distinct from high-performance working data when planning the data layout. In an AWS example, S3 stores persistent libraries, tools and design specifications; EFS serves home directories and automation scripts; and FSx for Lustre provides high-performance shared processing storage. These are AWS service examples, not cloud-independent requirements. Actual service limits and performance depend on configuration and current terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AWS describes FSx for Lustre as integrating with S3 and supporting POSIX mounting, sub-millisecond latency and high throughput. Those capabilities do not establish what a particular EDA workflow will achieve: benchmark the intended configuration with representative files, access patterns and concurrency. Workflow changes may also be needed to make cloud storage options effective.
What network and data-location requirements matter?
Include more than internet bandwidth in the network plan. Measure bandwidth, latency, jitter and contention for node-to-node communication, shared-storage access, license-server connections, interactive engineering sessions and transfers to existing environments. A storage or compute choice that looks adequate in isolation may not perform as expected when data must cross a constrained link.

EDA design databases can comprise many large files, managed with version-control tools and used by engineering teams in different locations. Cadence identifies these distributed file collections and the need to match individual tools’ server, storage and network expectations as cloud-transition considerations. AWS also notes the management challenges of geographically distributed engineering teams and globally licensed EDA software.
For a global team, compare compute placement near engineers with placement near shared design data, license services or existing design environments. Account for replication, synchronization and data-transfer overhead. The available guidance identifies these as architectural trade-offs; it does not establish one preferred region or network topology.

What else belongs in a production EDA cloud environment?
Compute and storage are only part of the system. AWS’s 2020 scale-out architecture describes a compute cluster, scheduler, shared file system, license management, remote desktop and visualization, user access and identity controls, budgets, and monitoring. Plan these components together: a scheduler needs to understand job requirements and priorities, while license availability and persistent data must stay coordinated with elastic compute capacity.

Scheduling and burst capacity
Demand can be uneven. AWS describes IP characterization, functional verification and timing analysis as workloads that can create peaks and leave resources underused between runs. A scheduler should place jobs on suitable resources and make queue time and utilization visible. Elastic capacity can help with batch peaks, but its value depends on provisioning limits, job duration, license availability and how work recovers from interruption.
AWS’s 2020 article said EC2 Spot Instances could offer up to a 90% discount versus On-Demand prices for fault-tolerant workloads. This was an AWS-specific, historical statement, not a current savings guarantee. Check present pricing and interruption behavior, and establish whether a job supports checkpoint/restart, how costly a retry would be, and whether delay is acceptable before placing it on interruptible capacity.
Licenses, monitoring and cost controls
Measure cost per completed run or design milestone, not just the hourly price of compute. Include storage, data transfer, idle capacity, licenses, support and the engineering effort needed to operate the environment. Monitor queue time, utilization, failures and license use alongside cloud spend; budget visibility is part of the operating design, not an afterthought. AWS and Synopsys describe budget or usage-management features in their respective offerings.

How do BYOC, managed SaaS and hybrid EDA compare?
Synopsys describes three deployment contexts: bring your own cloud (BYOC), managed EDA software as a service (SaaS), and hybrid bursting. Which fits depends on who will operate the environment, where data and licenses reside, and how tightly the deployment must integrate with existing workflows.
| Approach | Operations and control | Data and integration questions | Best fit to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYOC | The customer manages the cloud infrastructure. | Decide how the environment connects to existing identity, network, license and data systems, and who handles patching, monitoring and recovery. | Teams that need customer control and can operate the cloud environment. |
| Managed SaaS | The vendor manages more of the environment’s operation; responsibilities must be confirmed with the provider. | Establish where data is stored and processed, how users and licenses are managed, what integrations are supported, and how results and data can be exported. | Teams looking to shift some environment operations to a vendor, subject to security, integration and governance requirements. |
| Hybrid bursting | Work is split between on-premises and cloud resources; one possible pattern submits jobs through an on-premises scheduler. | Plan data synchronization, job placement, license reachability and recovery across environments. | Teams that need to retain an existing environment while evaluating cloud capacity for peaks. |
For any model, compare control and operating responsibility, performance fit, data movement, elasticity, failure recovery, security and total cost. Synopsys’s platform page lists role-based management for projects, users, resources, licenses and budgets. These are vendor-reported platform capabilities; confirm which apply to the offered deployment and contract.
What security and governance checks should be part of the design?
Chip-design data may contain valuable proprietary IP, so evaluate security controls alongside performance. Define data classification, tenant and network isolation, encryption, identity lifecycle, role separation, audit logging, backup and recovery, incident response, retention, geographic restrictions and support access.
Synopsys lists SOC 2 Type 2 compliance, encryption at rest and in transit, MFA with role-based access control, a dedicated virtual network, workload protection, vulnerability management and continuous incident response for its platform. These are vendor-reported claims, not an independent assessment of every deployment. For procurement, verify the current attestation, its scope and period, and the controls and responsibilities applicable to the specific service.
