Depending on their components, an enabled plugin can add instructions and tools, start processes, or run code automatically with your user privileges. Claude Code’s permission rules and sandbox do not automatically contain every process a plugin starts, so an approval prompt is not a substitute for reviewing the plugin’s code and configuration.
What a Claude Code plugin contains
A plugin is a directory of components that Claude Code installs and loads as a unit. Its manifest is typically stored at .claude-plugin/plugin.json. Plugins are often obtained through marketplaces, which are catalogs that identify plugins and where to fetch them. Anthropic’s plugins overview describes the supported components and how they fit together.
- Skills add task instructions.
- Agents define subagent behavior.
- Hooks register handlers that run at lifecycle events.
- MCP servers make additional tools available to Claude Code.
- Other components, including language servers and mods, can extend the environment in different ways.
An enabled plugin is part of every session where it is enabled. Its hooks and MCP server processes operate in those sessions; names and descriptions for invocable skills, agents, and commands enter Claude’s context on every turn, while their full instructions load when used. As a result, a plugin can affect context or session behavior even if you do not deliberately invoke each component.
What an enabled plugin can access and do
The practical capabilities depend on the components in the plugin. Anthropic’s plugin security and trust guidance describes several routes by which a plugin can act:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Run lifecycle hooks: Hooks can launch shell commands automatically at configured points, including before or after tool calls.
- Run mods: A mod can execute JavaScript inside Claude Code with the user’s permissions.
- Start servers: Claude Code connects to MCP servers declared by an enabled plugin, making their tools available. A stdio MCP server runs as a process started on the machine; declared language servers are also started by Claude Code.
- Expose executables to Bash: An enabled plugin’s
bin/directory is added to the Bash tool’sPATH, allowing Bash commands to invoke executables from it. - Influence Claude through instructions: Skills, commands, and agents can supply instructions that affect how Claude uses tools it already has.
- Change after review: If marketplace auto-update is enabled, plugin files can change after you inspected them.
Anthropic states: “A Claude Code plugin you install can execute arbitrary code on your machine with your user privileges.” This describes the plugin’s potential authority; it does not mean that every plugin performs every action or that every plugin is malicious.
What permissions and sandboxing cover
Keep two kinds of activity distinct: a tool call Claude makes and a process plugin code starts on its own. According to Anthropic’s security documentation and plugin security guidance, permission rules apply to Claude’s tool calls, but do not automatically govern every process started independently by plugin code.

| Activity | How controls apply | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Claude calling a plugin-provided MCP tool | It is a tool call, so permission rules apply. | Review the tool’s purpose and the session’s applicable permissions. |
A Bash command invoking an executable in the plugin’s bin/ directory |
It is a tool call, so permission rules apply. | Consider what the command does and what authority it will have when run. |
| A shell command run by a plugin hook | Anthropic says command hooks run with full user permissions; hooks and processes they start run outside the sandbox. | A Claude tool-call approval or sandbox boundary should not be assumed to contain the hook process. |
| An MCP server or process started by a mod | These processes run outside the sandbox. | Inspect their launch configuration and code rather than relying only on Claude’s tool-call controls. |
The active permission mode matters too. In Manual mode, Claude Code starts with read-only permissions and asks before editing files, running tests, or executing commands. Auto mode uses a separate classifier to review actions and block those it judges unsafe; explicit ask and deny rules still apply. Users and organizations configure permissions. See Anthropic’s current security documentation for these modes and controls.
Permissions and sandboxing can help govern Claude’s tool calls, but they are not a full audit or a universal process container for plugin code. Anthropic also cautions that a Bash command a user approves may have broader operating-system access than file tools bounded to the working directory. Organization-level policies can further constrain marketplace use or plugin installation; details are covered in the authentication and permissions documentation.

Why hook timing matters
Hooks are handlers Claude Code runs automatically when their configured event and matcher apply. The hooks reference lists shell commands, HTTP endpoints, MCP tool calls, LLM prompts, and subagents as handler types, with events that can occur per session, per turn, or around tool calls.
| Hook point | When it runs | What it can do about the action |
|---|---|---|
PreToolUse |
Before the tool call. | Can block the call before it happens. |
PostToolUse |
After a successful tool call. | Can provide feedback or change what Claude sees, but cannot undo the action’s completed side effects. |
A post-tool hook is not a rollback mechanism: filtering or replacing the result shown to Claude does not undo files written, commands executed, or network requests sent. For that reason, inspect both the hook’s trigger and handler; an automatically triggered handler can be consequential even when no one invokes a visible plugin command.

How to review a plugin before installing it
- Check who publishes the marketplace. Anthropic distinguishes official, community, and third-party marketplaces, but a marketplace’s name does not establish that every plugin in it is safe. Treat the source as useful context, not as a security guarantee.
- Inspect the plugin details. In Claude Code, open
/pluginand review the details pane for commands, agents, skills, hooks, MCP servers, and LSP servers. Some local or custom marketplace entries may not provide a complete component summary before installation, so an incomplete view is not proof that no other components are present. See Install and manage plugins. - Read the actual files and configuration. Pay particular attention to hook commands, scripts, server launch commands, plugin executables, and instructions that steer Claude. Review the code and configuration, not only the marketplace description.
- Understand the installation scope. User scope enables a plugin across projects for that user on the machine. Project scope shares enablement with repository collaborators. Local scope limits enablement to the user’s repository context. Choose the narrowest scope that meets your needs; the install documentation explains these options.
- Account for updates. Find out whether marketplace auto-update is enabled and consider how you will review changes. Files that change after installation may no longer match the version you initially inspected.
- Match safeguards to the repository. Use narrow permissions and organization-managed settings where available. Review proposed commands and code before approving them; for untrusted content, consider an isolated VM or other sandbox outside Claude Code. Do not assume approval alone limits a command to the project directory.
What to remember about plugin risk
- A plugin combines software components and instructions; it is not merely a prompt template.
- An enabled plugin can affect each session where it is enabled, including through automatically running hooks or server processes.
- Plugin-started processes and hooks may run with your user privileges outside Claude Code’s sandbox, while Claude’s tool calls are subject to permission rules.
- A pre-tool hook may stop an action; a post-tool hook runs after successful execution and cannot reverse its side effects.
- Marketplace reputation, installation details, permissions, and sandboxing are useful parts of a review, but none replaces examining the plugin’s code and configuration.
