Chatbot conversation context is what a model can use while responding in the current thread; persistent memory is information a service may retain or retrieve to personalize separate chats. Starting a new chat gives you a new thread, but does not necessarily delete saved memories, old chats, files, or connected sources. To reset what a chatbot knows, identify which layer you mean and use the service’s matching controls.
Conversation context and persistent memory are different
Conversation context is for the current interaction
A model uses conversation context—the information available to it in an interaction—to respond. Context is finite: as a thread grows or includes large inputs, it can approach the model’s context limit. A long visible transcript does not guarantee that every earlier detail remains equally available to the model. Claude, for example, says it may summarize earlier messages to make room as a conversation approaches the limit. OpenAI’s API documentation also explains context-window limits for longer or more complex inputs; that is technical background, not a consumer ChatGPT setting for resetting a window. Persistent memory can affect later chats
Some chatbots can retain or retrieve selected information across separate conversations to personalize future responses. This is not the same as a full account archive or the entire history of a thread. A new chat starts a fresh ordinary conversation, but it may still draw on persistent memory, custom instructions, connected sources, or other product settings. Choose the action that matches what you want to reset

The distinction matters: hiding a chat, turning memory off, asking the chatbot to forget something, and deleting data are not interchangeable. Product controls and labels vary by service, account, region, plan, platform, and workspace.

Reset memory and chats in ChatGPT
Stop cross-chat personalization
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the available memory controls and turn off the feature you do not want used. The controls and names may differ by account or workspace.
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. If you later turn it back on, chats still in history may be used to create new memories. Turning off model improvement is a separate data-use control, not a memory reset. OpenAI Help Center: Memory in ChatGPT; OpenAI Help Center: Data Controls FAQ.
Remove a saved detail and its source conversation
- In the Memory controls, delete the relevant saved memory, or ask ChatGPT to forget the detail and verify the result in the controls.
- Delete the conversation where you originally shared the detail if you also want to remove that source chat.
- Check for other copies that may matter, such as archived chats, files in Library, or connected apps.
Saved memories and chats are separate: deleting the original chat alone may leave a saved memory, and deleting a memory alone may leave the original chat. OpenAI states, “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.” OpenAI Help Center: Memory in ChatGPT.

Stop using information derived from past chats
If your account offers Reference chat history, turn it off in the Memory settings. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Separately saved memories are not removed by this control. OpenAI Help Center: Memory in ChatGPT.
Delete or archive a conversation
- In the chat list, open the conversation’s menu and choose Delete to remove it from your account view, or choose Archive to hide it from the regular sidebar.
- Use deletion only if you intend to remove the chat: it cannot be undone. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for system deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and legal or security exceptions.
Archiving does not delete the chat; it remains subject to the same retention rules. OpenAI Help Center: How to Delete and Archive Chats in ChatGPT.

Use Temporary Chat for a temporary conversation
- Start a Temporary Chat from the ChatGPT interface.
- If the option appears before you begin, choose a non-personalized temporary chat when you do not want personalization.
Temporary Chats do not appear in history unless saved, and while temporary they do not create or update memories. OpenAI says they may be kept for safety for up to 30 days. Saving one converts it to a regular chat. OpenAI Help Center: Temporary Chat FAQ.
Reset controls in Gemini and Claude
Google Gemini
Google documents a past-chat memory toggle under Settings & help > Personal Intelligence. To find or delete prior chats, use Gemini Apps Activity. Google notes that a short delay may occur before a deleted chat stops being used for personalization, so do not assume the effect is instantaneous. Google Gemini Apps Help: Manage past-chat memory.

Anthropic Claude
Claude’s help documentation describes a memory reset that deletes memories, and an incognito option for starting a chat that will not use or save memory. - Current thread: start another thread if you simply want a clean conversation, or delete the thread if you want it removed from your chat list and handled under the service’s deletion policy.
- Saved memory: remove the relevant item in the memory controls; deleting a chat may not remove this separately stored item.
- History-derived personalization: disable the relevant history-reference control if offered, and follow the product’s stated deletion timing.
- Files and connected services: check Library or linked apps for copies; chatbot memory controls may not remove source material stored independently.
- Backend retention: distinguish immediate removal from the visible interface from scheduled system deletion or temporary safety retention. Read the service’s policy for exceptions and timing.
Settings and retention terms can change. Check the current controls and help pages for your account before relying on a specific menu label or deletion period.
