On June 29, 2020, SODA Foundation announced a broader charter that extended its work beyond open-source software to include standards for data autonomy. Formerly known as OpenSDS, it also announced China Unicom’s contribution of its S3-compatible object-storage project YIG and the release of Faroe 1.0, an open framework for managing data across different storage systems and cloud environments.
What did SODA Foundation’s expanded charter mean?
The Linux Foundation described the change as an evolution from OpenSDS to SODA Foundation. The expanded remit covered both open-source software and standards, with the goal of supporting data mobility and management across edge, core, and cloud environments. The announcement framed this work as a way to address storage silos and help organizations move and manage data across on-premises and multi-cloud environments. The June 29, 2020 announcement presented data autonomy as the reason for the broader scope.
What projects accompanied the announcement?
YIG: China Unicom’s object-storage contribution
China Unicom contributed YIG, described in the announcement as S3-compatible object storage, through the SODA Incubator. The incubator was presented as a way for projects to develop through community outreach, collaboration, and adoption. The release does not establish YIG’s present development status or availability.
Faroe 1.0: an open data framework
SODA announced Faroe 1.0 as an Open Data Framework for heterogeneous storage and multi-cloud data management. Its listed capabilities included support for block, file, and object storage, multi-cloud data control, telemetry, and resource management across different storage systems. The stated aim was to reduce data silos and make data management and mobility more integrated across on-premises and multi-cloud environments.

The announcement characterized Container Storage Interface (CSI) plug-and-play as experimental at that time. That wording describes its status in 2020; it does not establish the feature’s current status. The release likewise does not verify current versions or availability of Faroe or YIG.
Who was involved?
The release named China Unicom, Fujitsu, Huawei, NTT Communications, and Toyota Motor Corporation as premiere members at the time. It also listed China Construction Bank Fintech, Click2Cloud, GMO Pepabo, IIJ, MayaData, LinBit, Scality, Sony, Wipro, and Yahoo Japan. These names are a snapshot of participants reported in June 2020, not a verified current membership roster.
SODA’s membership page describes the foundation as a directed fund under the Linux Foundation and as a neutral home for community coordination. It also describes member benefits such as networking, roadmap participation, and vendor-supported proof-of-concept testing.

Steven Tan, then SODA Foundation chairman and Futurewei vice president and CTO of Cloud Solution, said: “Providing a neutral forum where both vendors and end users can contribute to building and integrating data management solutions for mobility and autonomy is our goal.” The statement captures the announcement’s focus: coordinating contributions from different participants rather than tying data management to one storage platform or cloud.
