Caroline is not a second Samsung Chromebook sold alongside the Chromebook Pro. It is the Samsung Chromebook Pro’s project codename and board name in Chromium’s device information. A 2016 report used Samsung-linked development clues to infer that Caroline was another Samsung Chromebook in production; the later device record identifies the finished model as the Chromebook Pro.

What is Caroline?

Chromium’s device information table maps the project codename Caroline and board name caroline to the Samsung Chromebook Pro. The table also identifies its base board as glados, its platform as Skylake, and its category as Convertible. Chromium’s device information is the clearest record of the model identity.

In this context, “another Samsung device” refers to a device being developed under a codename, not a separate retail model that remained distinct from the Chromebook Pro.

Why did a 2016 report call it another Samsung device?

In a report published October 30, 2016, Gabriel Brangers of Chrome Unboxed described clues found while the Chromebook Pro had not yet been officially announced. The report connected Caroline and Kevin through Samsung-addressed development work involving stylus and digitizer hardware. It also noted a touch-configuration commit attributed to a developer with a Samsung email address and pointed to that contributor’s name on commits associated with Kevin and other Samsung devices, including Samsung Chromebox 2 and Series 5 550 Chromebook. The original report treated the new commit as suggestive rather than conclusive, saying it was “still not 100% concrete.”

Those were development-stage clues, and the story’s conclusion was an inference from them. Chromium’s later device mapping resolves the identity: Caroline is the Chromebook Pro, not an additional Chromebook to count separately.

What does the digitizer firmware evidence confirm?

In an April 21, 2018 Chromium OS developers mailing-list reply, developer Duncan Laurie pointed to Samsung Chromebook Pro Caroline firmware as an example containing digitizer configuration: “The Samsung Chromebook Pro has an example with the digitizer:” The mailing-list thread offers narrow technical corroboration that Caroline is associated with Chromebook Pro digitizer firmware.

That example does not independently establish every detail of the 2016 commit-authorship investigation, nor does it suggest Caroline was a separate commercial model.

What is known about ChromeOS support?

The third-party cros.tech Caroline page labels the device “end of life” and says it will not receive further updates. It lists ChromeOS 114 stable and credits Google’s chromiumdash data. Because that version listing is old and the status appears on a third-party tracker, treat it as the tracker’s reported status—not as a freshly checked official Google support notice. See the cros.tech Caroline page.

Which model name should you use?

For the physical product, use Samsung Chromebook Pro. Caroline is useful when discussing its development identity, board, firmware, or device records. Current stock, condition, and price have not been verified, so the codename alone is not evidence that a particular unit is available or worth buying.
