Drone skills can lead to work and projects in aerial photography, asset inspection, mapping, agriculture, natural resources, public safety, and environmental observation. In the United States, piloting is only the starting point: professional work often also calls for GIS, surveying, photogrammetry, inspection, or industry-specific knowledge. For most small-drone work or business under FAA Part 107, pilots generally need a Remote Pilot Certificate and must follow the rules for the particular flight.
What work can drone skills support?
Drone skills are used across several kinds of work, but they do not all amount to a standalone “drone pilot” job. Many roles combine flight with collecting, interpreting, or delivering useful information.
Surveying and mapping
Surveying and mapping technicians collect and process geographic information, combine GIS and other data, and help create or update maps and surveys. A drone can capture site photographs for these workflows, alongside field collection and office processing. The aircraft is a collection tool; producing useful survey or map data also depends on the relevant measurement and data skills. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) occupation profile notes that technicians may use drones to take photos and that GIS or other technology experience may help.
Cartography and photogrammetry
Cartographers and photogrammetrists interpret geographic information and create maps and related products. Their work may use GIS, CAD, remote sensing, and other technical methods. Drone imagery can be one source of data, but it does not replace the skills needed to process, interpret, and communicate that data. BLS says a relevant bachelor’s degree is typical for this occupation. See the BLS profile for cartographers and photogrammetrists.

Inspection and asset documentation
A drone can capture aerial imagery or repeatable visual records of assets. FAA survey responses include aerial imagery and asset inspection among reported work activities. Such imagery can support a qualified inspection workflow; an image alone does not certify an asset’s condition.
Agriculture and natural resources
FAA survey examples include agriculture, natural-resources work, and animal or environmental surveying. Projects may involve observation or data capture, but what a pilot may fly, measure, or apply depends on the mission and applicable rules.
Public safety and emergency response
Government agencies, law enforcement, and public safety organizations use drone programs. The FAA describes operational authority pathways for these organizations. Agency procedures and mission-specific training are part of this work in addition to flight skills.

Photography, video, marketing, and communications
FAA survey respondents reported photo and video work as well as marketing and communications activities. In U.S. airspace, non-recreational operations generally fall under Part 107, and the flight must still meet the applicable operating and airspace rules.

| Public safety | Information to support an agency mission | Agency procedures and mission training, as well as flight skills |
These are pathways and project types, not a promise that employers hire for a universal “drone pilot” occupation. BLS occupational profiles provide the clearest labor-market context for adjacent surveying and mapping, and cartography and photogrammetry roles, where drone capture is one part of broader work.
What do related occupations pay, and what is the outlook?
BLS figures describe the entire occupation, not drone-only jobs or the effect of earning a pilot certificate.

The BLS profiles also indicate different preparation: GIS or technology experience may help surveying and mapping technicians, while cartographers and photogrammetrists typically need a relevant bachelor’s degree and technical coursework.

How do you train for drone work?
- Build safe flight fundamentals. Practice controlled takeoffs and landings, orientation, steady movement, emergency response, equipment and battery checks, and preflight planning only where flight is permitted. This is a practical learning progression, not an FAA requirement for a set number of logged hours.
- Study and qualify under Part 107, if your work requires it. The FAA’s knowledge subjects include regulations, airspace, weather, aircraft loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, and radio communications. For initial applicants, the FAA describes creating an IACRA profile to obtain an FAA Tracking Number, scheduling the UAG knowledge test at an FAA-approved testing center, passing it, and submitting the certificate application. Follow the current steps on the FAA’s Become a Certificated Remote Pilot page.
- Keep your knowledge current. The FAA says certificate holders must complete online recurrent training every 24 calendar months to operate under Part 107. The FAA page lists free recurrent-course options.
- Add a specialty that matches your intended work. For mapping, develop GIS, surveying, remote-sensing, or photogrammetry skills. For inspection, learn the asset and its reporting workflow. For agriculture or environmental projects, build subject-area knowledge and understand the applicable operating requirements.
- Create a work sample. A portfolio could show a lawful, clearly documented project and its output, such as an image set, map, or inspection-style report. It is a practical way to demonstrate collection and processing skills, not a universal employer requirement.
What rules affect professional drone projects?
FAA Part 107 covers civil small UAS work and business operations for aircraft under 55 pounds. Its requirements include visual line of sight and other operating limitations. A certificate is not permission to conduct every flight: the aircraft, location, airspace, and mission all matter.
- Check the airspace. Controlled-airspace operations require authorization. The FAA describes LAANC and manual request routes; its page says LAANC requests may be submitted up to 90 days before a planned flight. Because procedures can change, verify current details with the FAA’s LAANC information.
- Check whether the mission needs a waiver. Some operations that depart from specified Part 107 limitations require a waiver. Consult the FAA’s Part 107 waiver guidance for the limitations and process.
- Verify the complete operation before flying. Check the current rule, airspace, location, aircraft, and intended operation. General guidance cannot determine whether a particular mission is allowed.
These rules concern U.S. civil small-UAS operations. Pilots outside the United States need to check their own country’s and locality’s aviation rules.
What does a Part 107 certificate establish?
For most U.S. small-UAS work or business conducted under Part 107, the FAA generally requires a Remote Pilot Certificate. The certificate demonstrates knowledge of the FAA’s subject areas; it does not establish GIS, surveying, inspection, or sector expertise. As the FAA puts it, “In order to fly your drone under the FAA’s Small UAS Rule (Part 107), you must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA.” The FAA’s certification page explains eligibility, testing, application, and recurrent training.
