The Amazon Fire TV Cube combines a Fire TV streaming player with hands-free Alexa: its built-in far-field microphones let you use supported voice commands without picking up the remote. Compared with a Fire TV Stick, the third-generation Cube also adds an HDMI input, built-in Ethernet and a speaker. For a fair comparison, this guide uses the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023); other Stick models have different features.
What can the Amazon Fire TV Cube do?
The Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) is a streaming box designed to sit near your television. It runs Fire TV apps and services, while its microphones and speaker also support hands-free Alexa interaction.
- Stream video: It supports streaming up to 4K, provided the app, title, display and network support the format you want.
- Take voice requests: Amazon lists far-field voice control and a four-microphone array, so the Cube can hear supported Alexa requests from across the room.
- Control compatible equipment: You can use supported voice commands to control compatible TVs, soundbars and receivers.
- Connect another device through HDMI: Its HDMI input can accept compatible equipment such as a cable box, game console or webcam. This is an input for a connected device, not a built-in TV tuner, and compatibility can vary.
- Use wired networking: A built-in 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port lets you connect the Cube to a wired network.
Amazon lists HDMI 2.1 input and output, HDMI output with ARC, USB 2.0, an IR extender connector and a built-in speaker. These ports and voice features do not mean every accessory or Alexa command works in every country; check compatibility for your market and connected equipment.
Fire TV Cube vs. Fire TV Stick 4K Max
The key difference is the setup each device is built for: the Cube is a hands-free voice assistant and streaming box with extra connections, while the Stick is a compact player that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port. This comparison is specifically with the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023), not every Fire TV Stick.

Amazon describes the Cube’s processor as “2X more powerful than the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.” That is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent benchmark, so it should not be read as a measured speed difference in everyday use.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Cube if your setup benefits from its extra hardware
- You want hands-free Alexa in the room without relying on a remote or linked Echo.
- You want to connect compatible equipment, such as a cable box or game console, through the Cube’s HDMI input.
- You prefer a built-in Ethernet port or a set-top device with its own speaker.
Choose the Stick 4K Max if you want a compact streaming player
- You want a device that plugs into an HDMI port rather than placing a set-top box nearby.
- Remote-based voice control is enough, or you already use a linked Echo for hands-free requests.
- You do not need the Cube’s HDMI input or built-in Ethernet connection.
Both can provide 4K streaming when the service, content, screen and network support it. Before buying, check the exact model generation and confirm the streaming apps, voice features, ports and accessories you need are supported where you live.
