Differences in color, composition, geology, density and small moons can preserve clues to where asteroids formed and how the early solar system changed. NASA’s Lucy mission is designed to make those comparisons among Jupiter Trojan asteroids, using flybys to gather a broad set of measurements.
Why compare several asteroids?
Asteroids are remnants of the early solar system, but members of the same broad group need not share the same history. Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids occupy stable orbits associated with Jupiter, yet their unexpectedly varied surface compositions may indicate that they formed in different locations and were later transported as the planets formed and evolved. Comparing multiple Trojans can test that picture; a single encounter cannot establish an object’s birthplace on its own. NASA’s Lucy science goals describe this comparative rationale.
Lucy’s planned targets vary widely in color and size. NASA’s FAQ gives a range from less than approximately 1 kilometer to around 100 kilometers in diameter. That range describes Lucy’s selected targets, not the asteroid population as a whole. What can scientists compare at each asteroid?
Lucy’s instruments are intended to build a richer picture than a set of photographs. The mission’s measurements can be compared across targets to look for patterns and exceptions.

Surface geology and impact history
Images and other observations can map an asteroid’s shape, reflectivity, craters, crustal structure and layering. Crater distributions and surface units help scientists estimate relative surface ages and reconstruct impact histories. Fractures, ejecta and exposed layers can also offer clues about material below the surface.
Color, composition and surface material
Surface color and infrared observations help distinguish materials and map the distribution of minerals, ices and organic species. Scientists can characterize regolith—the loose material covering a surface—and compare how it differs from one asteroid to another. Those differences can help constrain formation and alteration histories without, by themselves, proving a specific origin.

Mass, density and internal clues
Mass and volume together allow scientists to estimate bulk density, a useful way to compare the interiors of different bodies. Surface features such as craters and fractures provide additional evidence about structure and subsurface material. A body’s bulk properties and its surface composition answer different questions, so comparing both is more informative than relying on either alone.
Moons and rings
Lucy will also search for satellites and rings. A small companion can reveal that an asteroid is part of a more complex system; observations of such systems help scientists investigate their structure and history alongside the primary body’s properties.

How Lucy makes those observations
Lucy carries L’Ralph, which combines a color camera with an infrared imaging spectrometer; the high-resolution L’LORRI camera; and L’TES, a thermal emission spectrometer. Its radio link can support Doppler measurements used to estimate asteroid masses, while terminal tracking cameras follow targets and document their shapes. Why fly past several asteroids instead of orbiting one?
Repeatedly slowing down enough to enter orbit around separate asteroids would require substantial fuel. NASA says the fuel cost rises when a mission tries to repeat that maneuver at multiple targets. Lucy instead conducts flybys, gathering measurements during brief encounters. NASA describes the approach as reconnaissance: the results can guide future exploration. The trade-off is breadth versus depth. A multi-target flyby can compare several different bodies along a mission trajectory, but it does not provide the prolonged observation of an orbiter, a landing, or sample collection. Lucy is not designed to orbit or return samples from its targets. NASA’s mission overview describes Lucy as visiting three main-belt asteroids and eight Trojan objects: five asteroids and three asteroid moons. The count distinguishes asteroids from their small moons. NASA’s FAQ lists past encounters with Dinkinesh and its satellite Selam in 2023, and Donaldjohanson in 2025. It lists future Trojan encounters with Eurybates and its satellite Queta in 2027; Polymele and its satellite in 2027; Leucus and Orus in 2028; and the Patroclus-Menoetius binary in 2033. In an August 6, 2026 update, NASA reported that Lucy had observed Eurybates, Polymele, Leucus and Orus with L’LORRI in spring 2026. The team used those observations to help select camera settings and prepare for the coming flybys. Close-range views will have different lighting from Earth-based observations, including shadowed parts of the surfaces; camera tests help the team prepare for those conditions. What a multi-asteroid mission can—and cannot—show
- It can reveal contrasts: comparing color, composition, geology and density shows how varied a group of asteroids may be.
- It can test formation models: those contrasts may help constrain where bodies formed and how they moved, but observations are evidence for models rather than proof from one flyby.
- It can add context through companions: moons and rings can provide information about a target’s system and history.
- It cannot replace every kind of mission: brief flybys offer population-level comparison, while orbiters, landers and sample-return missions are designed for different kinds of close investigation.
