You do not need an Amazon Prime subscription to use an Echo’s core Alexa features. You can ask questions, set alarms and timers, control compatible smart-home devices, use supported skills, and more. Some content and services—especially music—have separate access limits, subscriptions, or regional restrictions.
What can you do with an Echo without Prime?
Echo is a hands-free Alexa device: say its wake word, then make a voice request. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ gives examples such as asking questions, checking the weather, adding items to a shopping list, and requesting music. The exact features available can vary by Echo model, region, and connected service.
Set alarms and timers
Ask Alexa to set an alarm or timer; you can also manage them in the Alexa app. Routines can use an alarm as a trigger, where supported.
Control compatible smart-home devices
Alexa can control or check compatible lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, cameras, locks, TVs, printers, kitchen appliances, and robot vacuums. What works depends on the device and how it connects to Alexa. Check Amazon’s device and Alexa FAQ and the device maker’s compatibility information before buying equipment.

Group actions into routines
Routines combine supported actions—for example, turning compatible lights on or off, playing music, or making a call. Depending on availability, a routine can start from a voice command, a scheduled time, sound detection, or another supported trigger. Amazon explains routine triggers and actions in its routines help.
Use Alexa skills
Skills are voice-activated apps covering categories such as games and trivia, education, health and fitness, productivity, shopping, smart home, and sports. Browse them in the Alexa app. Skills and their content are not necessarily free; check the terms for any particular skill before using it. See Amazon’s Alexa skills information.

Call and message supported contacts
Alexa supports Alexa-to-Alexa calls and messaging, plus calls to certain mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico. Supported devices, countries, and number types vary, and emergency numbers are excluded. Alexa calling is not a way to contact emergency services. Check Amazon’s Alexa Communication help for current limits.
Use the Alexa app with your speaker
The companion app can help manage Echo devices, smart-home controls, music playback, reminders, alarms, timers, and features such as Drop In. Amazon also lists information, answers, and games among its app functions. Some capabilities depend on your device, account, and region; see the Alexa app information.

Can you listen to music without Prime?
In the United States, Amazon says customers without Prime or Music Unlimited can play an ad-supported selection of Amazon Music playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. It is a limited selection, not the full on-demand catalog. This specific free-music detail is U.S.-only; availability and terms elsewhere may differ. See Amazon’s Amazon Music FAQ for current terms.
Other music services may require their own subscriptions or accounts. Prime is not the same thing as a music-service subscription, so check the service’s terms if you want a particular song, catalog, or listening option.

What Prime does—and does not—change
Prime is not a prerequisite for Alexa’s basic voice assistance or the Echo functions described above. It also does not make every third-party service, skill, or piece of content free. Access depends on the provider, any separate subscription, device compatibility, and country.
Amazon describes Alexa+ as its newest Alexa version, but says availability is limited to compatible products and some devices remain on the original Alexa experience. Do not assume every Echo includes Alexa+; consult Amazon’s Alexa FAQ for device-specific availability.
