In May 2003, Mentor Graphics announced Calibre MTFlex, a way to distribute Calibre physical-verification work across multiple workstations. Unlike CalibreMT, which the contemporaneous report described as multithreading on a multi-CPU workstation, MTFlex was described as automatically partitioning designs among workstations on a heterogeneous network. Mentor’s stated aim was to improve performance as processors were added; the figures and release details below were plans and expectations reported at the time, not current specifications.

What was Calibre MTFlex?

Calibre MTFlex was a distributed-processing addition to Mentor Graphics’ Calibre physical-verification tools, announced in a May 12, 2003 EE Times report. The report said Mentor planned to introduce it that week. Its core distinction was the scale of the compute arrangement: CalibreMT handled multithreading inside a multi-CPU workstation, while MTFlex extended processing across several workstations.

How was MTFlex different from CalibreMT?

Feature Compute arrangement described in 2003 What the report establishes
CalibreMT Multithreading on a workstation with multiple CPUs In-workstation parallelism; the report gives no head-to-head benchmark data.
Calibre MTFlex Distributed processing across multiple workstations Automatic design partitioning across workstations on heterogeneous networks; detailed scheduling and compatibility specifications were not stated.

The 2003 report did not describe MTFlex’s scheduling algorithm, network protocols, supported processor types, memory requirements, workload limits, or scaling efficiency. It therefore supports a comparison of where work could be distributed, not a claim that one feature was faster in every design environment.

How did MTFlex split work across workstations?

According to EE Times, MTFlex automatically partitioned designs among multiple workstations. That description indicates that design work could be spread across networked machines rather than confined to the threads available on a single workstation. The report does not explain how partitions were chosen or how results were coordinated, so those implementation details cannot be inferred from the announcement.

What did Mentor mean by a 50 percent speedup per CPU?

Tony Nicoli, then Mentor’s director of marketing for Calibre, described the initial goal as a 50 percent performance improvement for each additional CPU. This was Mentor’s target as reported in 2003, not an independently documented benchmark result. Nicoli also expected the company might exceed that goal within the year; the report presents that as an expectation, not confirmation that it happened.

What did Mentor say about availability, licensing, and Linux?

EE Times reported that availability was planned for July 2003 and that MTFlex would not be licensed separately from Calibre. It also described 32-bit Linux as the likely platform. These are contemporary plans and expectations; the report does not establish that the July release occurred, nor do these details describe present-day platform support or licensing.

What workstation setup did Mentor describe?

Mentor said it was internally using a 24-processor Linux rack alongside an eight-processor master. This was an example of Mentor’s own setup as reported in 2003, not a recommended customer configuration or a general hardware requirement for MTFlex.

How does the announcement relate to later Calibre cloud scaling?

In 2019, Mentor reported that Calibre scaled to more than 4,000 CPUs for a single Azure job during experiments involving 5nm test chips and a full-reticle-sized 7nm production design. That is a vendor-reported historical experiment, not an MTFlex specification. Separately, TSMC said a joint cloud-verification project completed verification of a 5nm test chip in under four hours. These later accounts show Calibre cloud activity in 2019 but do not establish that MTFlex evolved into, or remains available as, a current product.

Is Calibre MTFlex available today?

The available reports establish the 2003 announcement and later Calibre cloud examples, but do not establish MTFlex’s current catalog, support, or license status. The 2003 operating-system expectation and release plan should be read as period-specific statements rather than guidance for a purchase or deployment today.
