For a two-liter baking soda rocket, gather a clean plastic drink bottle, baking soda, vinegar, a cork, paper towel, duct tape, three unsharpened pencils, and safety goggles. A funnel and measuring spoons help with setup. Use one activity’s instructions and quantities as a complete design; bottle rockets and film-canister rockets use different setups.
Supplies for a two-liter bottle rocket
| Supply | What it does |
|---|---|
| Clean plastic drink bottle | Forms the rocket body. The National Museum of the United States Army lists a two-liter bottle for its activity. |
| Baking soda and vinegar | React to produce carbon dioxide gas, which builds pressure in the bottle. |
| Paper towel or toilet paper | Wraps or holds the baking soda so it can be placed in the bottle as a packet. |
| Cork | Closes the bottle for launch. A cork that is too tight may prevent launch; one that is too loose may release too soon. |
| Duct tape and three unsharpened pencils | Materials listed by the Army museum activity for construction and support. |
| Safety goggles | Protect the eyes during the activity; educational activity sources explicitly call for eye protection. |
| Funnel and measuring spoons | Optional helpers for pouring liquids and measuring ingredients. |

Choose one design and follow its quantities
The Planetary Society’s two-liter bottle activity suggests two cups of vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda, with smaller amounts for a one-liter bottle. Treat these as that activity’s starting quantities, not as a universal formula or a guarantee of launch height. Do not combine bottle instructions with film-canister instructions: Science Buddies and the Lunar and Planetary Institute describe different rockets, with their own closures and setup.
Set up and launch safely
- Work outdoors in an open area, and wear safety goggles.
- Choose a stable place for the bottle to stand. Keep the launch area clear of objects that could get wet.
- After setting down the rocket, The Planetary Society’s bottle activity instructs participants to retreat at least 10 steps.
- If the bottle has not launched after a couple of minutes, its instructions say an adult should slowly remove the cork, taking care because pressure may have built up inside.
The Lunar and Planetary Institute’s separate film-canister activity says everyone except the launcher should stand at least 10 feet away and that the launcher should wear eye protection. That distance applies to its canister activity; it is not an independently established universal distance for every bottle design.

Why the rocket moves
Baking soda and vinegar release carbon dioxide. As gas pressure builds and then escapes through the opening, the expelled gas creates thrust in the opposite direction and pushes the rocket upward. The activity demonstrates a basic action-and-reaction principle; it does not use the same propellant chemistry as a spacecraft.
Ideas for simple launch experiments
To compare results, change one variable at a time and observe launch delay or relative height. Possible variables include:
Rank #2
- [ Rush to the sky! ] Rceico's rocket can reach a maximum altitude of 170 FEET! take it to an open space and start your rocket launch journey!
- [ Safe landing ] The rocket's shell is made of EEP foam material, and its light weight greatly improves its launch altitude. When the rocket flies to a certain height, the parachute will open automatically. The parachute + EEP foam material shell allows you to not worry about the possibility of the rocket breaking when landing.
- [ Night Launch] 'What if I can only be with my kids at night?' 'I won't be able to find the flying rocket at night.' No need to worry! We have installed lights on the rocket body so you can launch it at night and keep track of where it lands.
- [Delayed Launch] Since the propeller will be running at high speed when it starts, we have set a 3S delayed launch time for you. 3S after placing the rocket on the launch pad and pressing the launch button, the rocket will not run, giving you time to go to a safe place and wait for the rocket to start.
- [No need battery] The rocket has a built-in battery inside, USB-QC charging (the charging cable is in the package), it only takes 35 minutes to fully charge, and it can launch about 25 times on a single charge, saving the cost and trouble of replacing the battery.
- The amount of vinegar or baking soda.
- The rocket’s added mass.
- Whether fins or a nose cone affect its flight.
- Whether repeated launches under the same conditions produce similar results.
The cited activities suggest these as experiments, but they do not establish a guaranteed height for the bottle design.

Keep the launch area clear of anything that should not get wet. Rinse wet outdoor surfaces as needed. Science Buddies specifically recommends rinsing a concrete launch surface and rinsing and drying the canister and lid for its film-canister activity; those canister-cleaning details apply to that design, not as bottle-specific instructions.
