The name matters: these units are not simply the British Imperial system, even though the two systems share many unit names.
What are United States customary units?
U.S. customary units are the collection of non-SI units used for measurement in the United States. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends the term “U.S. customary” because the collection draws on several older traditions rather than forming one perfectly unified historical system. Examples include:
- Length: inch, foot, and yard
- Mass and weight: pound
- Capacity: gallon
- Temperature: degree Fahrenheit
The unit names and conventions come from older systems, including avoirdupois, troy, and apothecary measures. NIST describes the customary units as defined in terms of the International System of Units (SI). That means customary measurement remains in use, but its units have precise definitions connected to metric standards. NIST’s U.S. Metrication FAQs explain the terminology and point to conversion resources.
Is the U.S. customary system the same as British Imperial?
No. U.S. customary and British Imperial measures share familiar names and some relationships, but they are not interchangeable. NIST cautions against calling U.S. customary units “Imperial” or “British” because significant differences exist between the systems. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix B gives examples:

| Measure | U.S. customary | British Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Short or long ton | U.S. short ton: 2,000 pounds | British ton: 2,240 pounds |
| Gallon | The U.S. gallon derives from the English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches used by the colonists | The Imperial gallon adopted in 1824 is approximately 277.42 cubic inches |
| Foot | The ordinary foot for new applications is the international foot: exactly 0.3048 meter | The cited NIST comparison does not state a separate British foot value |
Some relationships are shared: both systems use 12 inches to a foot and 3 feet to a yard. Differences are especially important when interpreting gallons, fluid ounces, bushels, and tons. Specify the jurisdiction and exact unit when a conversion or technical document depends on it.
Why does the United States use feet and pounds?
U.S. customary measures descend from English measures used before U.S. independence and remain common in many U.S. applications. Their continued use does not mean the units lack precise standards: modern customary definitions are tied to metric units.

Federal law and policy allow both systems. NIST says U.S. law permits either SI or U.S. customary measurement. The Metric Act of 1866 legalized metric use; a 1988 amendment made SI the preferred system for U.S. trade and commerce while encouraging voluntary metric use. It did not ban customary measurement. The pace of metric use is left to companies, organizations, and individuals. See NIST’s Metrication in Law for the federal policy description.
Are U.S. customary units defined in metric?
Yes. NIST states that U.S. customary units are defined in terms of SI. A familiar example is the international foot, which is exactly 0.3048 meter. A 1977 National Bureau of Standards publication records that the yard and pound had been defined in terms of the meter and kilogram since 1893. NIST’s U.S. Survey Foot FAQ covers the metric basis and the distinction between modern and legacy foot definitions; the historical account is in Weights and Measures Standards of the United States: A Brief History (1977).

International foot and legacy U.S. survey foot
For new applications, use the international foot: exactly 0.3048 meter. NIST says the U.S. survey foot should be avoided for new use after December 31, 2022, while historical and legacy applications may retain it. Older surveying records or datasets may encode the survey-foot definition, so check the unit before combining legacy measurements with newer data.

For everyday conversions, use an authoritative conversion table or calculator and identify the unit variant first. A value in U.S. gallons is not the same as one in Imperial gallons, for example. Technical, surveying, or historical work may also require distinguishing the international foot from the U.S. survey foot.
