The main risks are that quantum technology may not scale on schedule, commercial demand may fail to cover development costs, and companies may need more capital before becoming profitable. A roadmap or headline performance figure is not proof of a commercially useful product. Before comparing quantum-computing stocks, examine each company’s technical progress, paying-customer demand, financial needs, revenue mix, and the basis for its performance claims.

Why quantum-computing companies carry unusual investment risk

Quantum-computing businesses must turn difficult technical research into systems customers can use and pay for. Success at one stage—such as demonstrating a prototype, adding qubits, or offering cloud access—does not establish that a company can build larger reliable systems, attract recurring demand, or earn a profit. Investors therefore face both technology risk and the ordinary business risks of funding, competition, and uncertain sales.

Company filings are useful for understanding what an issuer says could go wrong, but they are not independent validation of its technology or a recommendation to buy or sell its shares. The examples below concern public pure-play companies IonQ and Rigetti; their disclosures should not be generalized to every company or quantum architecture.

Can the technology meet its roadmap and scale?

A company can miss or delay goals for qubit counts, gate fidelity, error correction, system integration, or other milestones. Even technical progress may not yield a system that is useful or economical for customers. IonQ’s 2025 annual filing said it had not produced a scalable quantum computer and warned that research milestones could take longer than expected or never occur. Rigetti’s 2025 annual filing described roadmap changes and missed or at-risk milestones, and said it remained in the technology-development phase.

These disclosures make roadmap execution a central risk, not a minor schedule detail. A target is an expectation, not an achieved result. When assessing progress, look at what was delivered, when it was delivered, whether the roadmap changed, and whether the result advances toward an integrated system rather than a single component or laboratory demonstration.

Why a qubit count or fidelity number is not enough

Qubit count and fidelity are not complete measures of commercial capability. Results depend on how a metric is defined, the test conditions, and the system being measured. Rigetti’s filing reported fidelity figures for 84-qubit and 36-qubit systems based on internal testing and cautioned investors not to place undue reliance on the fidelity measures presented. Those issuer-reported figures are not independently verified comparisons and do not, by themselves, establish quantum advantage or customer value.

Compare technical claims only when the measurement methods and conditions are comparable. Also ask how a reported component-level result relates to error correction, system scale, useful workloads, and customer outcomes.

Will customers adopt the technology—and can sales support profitability?

A prototype or cloud-access offering does not show that customers will buy enough systems or consume enough services to cover research, manufacturing, sales, and operating costs. Demand may remain concentrated in research or development work rather than broad, repeat commercial use. IonQ’s 2026 first-quarter filing describes commercialization as uncertain and says revenue sufficient for profitability depends heavily on further system development and commercialization. Rigetti’s 2025 filing says it has not yet formed a scalable business model and may never become profitable.

For each company, distinguish among system sales, cloud access, development contracts, and other revenue. Consider whether customers return, expand usage, or renew contracts, and whether revenue depends heavily on a small number of counterparties or public-sector funding. Rigetti specifically disclosed that the substantial majority of its current revenue came from development contracts and identified public-sector customer concentration as a risk. That is a Rigetti-specific disclosure, not a sector-wide fact.

How do losses and funding needs affect shareholders?

Quantum development can require substantial spending before a business reaches profitability. The reported figures below illustrate losses and accumulated deficits, but they use different accounting measures and are not estimates of cash runway.

Company Reported loss Accumulated deficit Source and period
IonQ $633.7 million loss from operations in 2025 $1,194.1 million as of December 31, 2025 IonQ 2025 Form 10-K; fiscal year ended December 31, 2025
Rigetti $216.2 million net loss in 2025; $201.0 million net loss in 2024 $771.0 million as of December 31, 2025 Rigetti 2025 Form 10-K; fiscal years ended December 31, 2025 and December 31, 2024

IonQ’s figure is a loss from operations, while Rigetti’s are net losses; they should not be treated as identical measures. Neither a loss nor an accumulated deficit tells an investor, by itself, how long a company can operate without raising money. To assess financial resilience, review current cash and cash equivalents, operating cash flow, expected spending, debt, and contractual commitments together.

Rigetti said it needs substantial cash for research and operations and that additional capital may be needed sooner than planned. It warned that difficulty raising funds could force it to reduce or delay development. If a company issues new shares, existing holders may be diluted; the filings cited here do not establish whether, when, or in what amount a future issuance will occur.

How should investors treat forecasts and stock-price expectations?

Forward-looking statements rely on assumptions and estimates that may prove wrong. Revenue expectations, market-size estimates, technical schedules, and management targets are not guarantees. Rigetti stated in its 2025 Form 10-K: “our goals and objectives are aspirational and are not guarantees or promises that such goals and objectives will be met.”

A share price may reflect expectations well ahead of current revenue or proven commercial demand. The evidence summarized here does not establish current valuation, appropriate share prices, or likely returns. Treat valuation as a separate question: compare the assumptions embedded in a company’s expectations with its achieved milestones, revenue quality, and financing needs rather than treating a large market estimate as evidence of future performance.

A practical framework for comparing quantum-computing companies

Use the same questions for each company, and compare the same reporting periods and accounting measures where possible.

  • Technology and execution: What architecture does the company use? Which milestones have been achieved, delayed, or revised? Are performance figures based on internal or independent testing, and are the methods disclosed?
  • Commercialization: Who pays for the product or service? Are customers buying systems, using cloud access, or funding development contracts? Is there evidence of repeat use, renewals, or expanding demand?
  • Financial resilience: What are the company’s cash, operating cash flow, spending needs, debt, and commitments? What conditions could require new financing? Do not infer runway from an accounting loss alone.
  • Revenue and customer concentration: How much revenue depends on public-sector work or a small number of customers? How long do contracts last, and what happens when they end?
  • Forecast and valuation risk: Which statements are achieved results and which are targets? What assumptions support expected growth, and how do those assumptions relate to the company’s current commercial evidence?

Company filings change over time. IonQ’s cited annual figures cover 2025, while its commercialization disclosure comes from its 2026 first-quarter filing; Rigetti’s cited figures and risk statements come from its 2025 annual filing. For a current decision, use the latest filings and align periods and accounting measures before comparing companies.
