There is no single official list of the world’s largest technology companies. Revenue, stock-market value and composite company-size rankings measure different things—and use different company and industry coverage. In Fortune’s 2026 Global 500, Amazon ranked first overall by revenue, but the list covers every industry. In PwC’s market-capitalization snapshot dated March 31, 2026, NVIDIA ranked first. Forbes’ 2026 Global 2000 combines four financial measures rather than naming a winner by just one.

What does “largest tech company” mean?

It depends on what you mean by “largest.” Revenue measures sales over a financial period. Market capitalization is the stock market’s value for a listed company’s equity at a particular date. A composite ranking blends several indicators of financial scale. A company can lead one measure without leading the others.

To make a ranking meaningful, identify its metric, the companies eligible to appear, the publisher’s definition of technology, and the reporting period or snapshot date. Rankings may disagree because any of those choices differ.

Largest by revenue: Fortune Global 500

Fortune’s 2026 Global 500 ranks corporations across industries by revenue for fiscal years ending on or before March 31, 2026. Companies must publish financial data and report some or all of it to a government agency. Fortune reports figures as supplied and does not restate prior-year comparisons for accounting changes. Fortune’s 2026 Global 500 is therefore an all-industry revenue ranking, not a dedicated league table of technology companies.

Amazon ranked No. 1 overall; Apple was No. 6 and Alphabet No. 8. Those positions do not, by themselves, identify the largest technology company: Amazon’s first-place result is across all industries, and the list’s industry classification determines which companies count as technology.

What Fortune’s technology grouping shows

Fortune counted 38 companies in its technology sector for the 2026 list. Their combined revenue rose more than 20% to about $4 trillion, while their combined profits rose 36% to roughly $835 billion. These are sector totals under Fortune’s classification and reporting period, not a universal definition of the technology industry. The entire Global 500, across all industries, reported $43.1 trillion in revenue and 70.2 million employees. Fortune’s 2026 announcement provides the sector and overall-list figures.

Largest by market capitalization: PwC Global Top 100

Market capitalization answers a different question: how the market values a company’s listed equity at a specific point in time. In PwC’s 2026 Global Top 100, NVIDIA ranked first at $4,237 billion, Apple second at $3,726 billion, and Microsoft fourth at $2,749 billion. These figures are the values in PwC’s snapshot as of March 31, 2026—not live prices or a permanent ranking. PwC attributes the underlying market data to S&P Global Market Intelligence LLC. See PwC’s Global Top 100.

Largest by a combined financial ranking: Forbes Global 2000

Forbes’ 2026 Global 2000 is not a revenue-only or market-cap-only list. It uses FactSet data to screen public companies across sales, profits, assets and market value. Forbes creates a top-2,000 ranking for each measure, assigns rank-based scores, weights the four measures equally and orders companies by the combined score. A high placement therefore reflects strength across the combined measures, not necessarily the top value in any one of them.

Forbes says its market values use closing prices from May 15, 2026, and include all common shares outstanding. It uses the latest 12 months of available financial data as of that date; the period may vary with reporting schedules, country rules and database capture timing. The ranking excludes publicly traded subsidiaries whose parent consolidates their figures, as well as companies without reliable or timely data. See Forbes’ 2026 Global 2000.

Which ranking should you use?

  • Use revenue if “largest” means the most sales during a financial period. State the fiscal-year basis and whether the list covers all industries or only technology.
  • Use market capitalization if you mean the highest stock-market valuation. Name the snapshot date because share prices change.
  • Use a composite ranking if you want a broader measure combining several financial dimensions. Explain the measures and weights rather than presenting the result as a revenue or market-value winner.

For any claim about the “largest tech company,” name the metric, ranking source, eligible-company universe and date or period. That makes clear what the ranking establishes—and what it does not.
