The shortcut that replaces Home or End depends on your operating system, keyboard, and the application receiving the keystroke. There is no single shortcut that behaves identically everywhere.
In standard Windows text editing, Home and End are usually available directly. On a MacBook or another compact keyboard, Fn plus an arrow key commonly provides the physical Home and End functions. macOS also has separate shortcuts for moving to the beginning or end of a line and document.
Windows Home and End shortcuts
Most full-size Windows keyboards include dedicated Home and End keys. In an editable text field, these keys normally move the cursor to the beginning or end of the current line.
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Beginning of the current line | Home |
| End of the current line | End |
| Beginning of the document | Ctrl+Home |
| End of the document | Ctrl+End |
| Select from the cursor to the beginning of the line | Shift+Home |
| Select from the cursor to the end of the line | Shift+End |
| Select from the cursor to the beginning of the document | Ctrl+Shift+Home |
| Select from the cursor to the end of the document | Ctrl+Shift+End |
For example, if the cursor is halfway through a paragraph, pressing Home takes it to the start of that line. It does not normally take the cursor to the first line of the file. Use Ctrl+Home for that.

Using a laptop or compact Windows keyboard
Some laptops print Home and End as secondary legends on the arrow keys. A common combination is Fn+Left Arrow for Home and Fn+Right Arrow for End, but this is not a universal Windows shortcut. The keyboard manufacturer decides how the function layer works.
Check the keycap legend or the laptop manual. On some models, you may need to hold Fn; on others, Fn Lock changes whether the arrow key or its secondary function is active. A numeric keypad may also produce Home or End only under a particular Num Lock state.
macOS shortcuts that replace Home and End
Apple’s standard text-editing shortcuts distinguish between the physical Home/End functions, the current line, and the whole document.
| Action | macOS shortcut |
|---|---|
| Emulate the Home key; scroll to the beginning of a document | Fn+Left Arrow |
| Emulate the End key; scroll to the end of a document | Fn+Right Arrow |
| Beginning of the current line | Command+Left Arrow |
| End of the current line | Command+Right Arrow |
| Beginning of the document | Command+Up Arrow |
| End of the document | Command+Down Arrow |
| Select to the beginning of the line | Shift+Command+Left Arrow |
| Select to the end of the line | Shift+Command+Right Arrow |
| Select to the beginning of the document | Shift+Command+Up Arrow |
| Select to the end of the document | Shift+Command+Down Arrow |
| Beginning of a line or paragraph | Control+A |
| End of a line or paragraph | Control+E |
The distinction matters. Command+Left Arrow and Command+Right Arrow are the usual Mac shortcuts for the start and end of the current line. They are not exact replacements for document-wide Home and End behavior. For document boundaries, use Command+Up Arrow and Command+Down Arrow.

Linux and application-specific shortcuts
Linux does not impose one Home and End behavior across every desktop application. The desktop environment, toolkit, terminal, editor, and window focus can all affect what the keys do.
In many Linux text editors, Home moves to the beginning of the current line, End moves to its end, Ctrl+Home moves to the top of the document, and Ctrl+End moves to the bottom. However, the application’s own shortcut reference takes priority.

What happens outside a text editor?
Home and End do not always control a text cursor. Their action depends on which control currently has focus.
- In an editable text field, they commonly move the insertion point to a line boundary.
- In a list or grid, Home may move focus to the first item and End to the last item.
- In a scrollable region, they may scroll to the top or bottom without changing the selected item.
- In a browser, terminal, remote desktop session, or virtual machine, another software layer may intercept the key first.
For example, Windows list and grid controls can use Home and End to focus the first and last item. A scroll view can instead use them to move to the top or bottom while leaving focus where it is. If a shortcut appears not to work, click inside the document or text box before testing it.
Shortcuts that are often confused with Home and End
Ctrl+Left Arrow and Ctrl+Right Arrow are not general Windows or Linux replacements for Home and End. They normally move the cursor by one word at a time. On macOS, the comparable word-navigation shortcuts are usually Option+Left Arrow and Option+Right Arrow.

How can I select everything from the cursor to the end of a document?
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+End. On macOS, press Shift+Command+Down Arrow. The application must support standard text selection for these shortcuts to work.
Why do Home and End scroll instead of moving my cursor?
The focus may be in a list, grid, web page, or scrollable control rather than an editable text field. Click inside the editor first. The application may also have customized the shortcut, or a remote desktop, terminal, browser, or virtual-machine layer may have intercepted it.
The Bottom Line
For Windows, use Home and End for the current line, and add Ctrl for the document. On macOS, use Command+Left/Right for the current line and Command+Up/Down for the document; Fn+Left/Right emulates the physical Home and End functions. Linux applications generally follow the Windows-style arrangement, but their own shortcut settings are the final authority.
