Which technologies should you unlock first?
A beginner guide updated October 1, 2026 for PC update 1.007 recommends these five early picks. The costs below are the listed technology-point costs; your ability to use some unlocked recipes also depends on mastery.

Source: Keeper’s Field Guide II’s beginner guide. A separate first-week walkthrough agrees on the same core choices but puts Chopping and The Concept of Stone before Woodworking I. That makes the order a matter of immediate need: get the material you are currently missing rather than following a rigid sequence.
How should you adapt the route to your immediate goal?
For common building materials
Prioritize Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone when your next construction or crafting step needs wedges, firewood, planks, or stone pieces. Check Building mastery as well as technology unlocks: the first-week walkthrough says wood wedges and Pieces of stone require Building mastery 3. Rusty tools provide only +1 each, so keep relevant tools on your toolbar and earn the first Building talent point through the Lumberjack and Rock Breaker inspirations.

For Herm’s farming request
Buy Gardening early enough to open the garden beds, then plant the wheat. It can grow while you handle other opening tasks, so there is little reason to postpone the request until every other technology is purchased.
For the first body and anatomy progression
Pick a pocket during the first autopsy before burial to obtain an early blue point, according to the walkthrough. It identifies Skin and Bones as costing 5 green and 2 blue and requiring the initial Anatomy mastery progression. Blue points are comparatively scarce early, so avoid spending them casually before you know which anatomy unlock you need.

What should you know about points and starter unlocks?
Chopping, mining, clearing junk, and harvesting are listed as sources of technology points. Red and green points come readily from these ordinary tasks, while blue points can come from autopsy actions. The game-data reference also says points left on the ground persist and are collected when you sleep, and that the carrying cap is 999 points per color. In practice, collect points as you do useful work instead of stopping to grind one source.
The Concept of Wood is listed at 2 red and 2 green in the technology planner, but the first-week walkthrough says the first sleep at home grants it along with a Sawhorse for free. Check whether the opening reward has already given you the unlock before budgeting points for it: the planner’s node cost does not mean you must pay that cost when the game grants it as a starter reward.

What Bronze Works does—and does not—unlock
Bronze Works and Bronze Craft are separate technologies. Bronze Works is a root Metallurgy technology costing 5 red and gives access to the anvil. It does not unlock Bronze Detail. The game-data reference places Bronze Craft, which unlocks Bronze Detail, after Bronze Melting at a cost of 30 red; it says the opening’s Bronze Detail requirement sits behind three Metallurgy technologies costing 45 red altogether. If a recipe still needs Bronze Detail after you buy Bronze Works, that is a later branch rather than a missing benefit from the first purchase.
How do you choose what to buy next?
- Check the next active quest or recipe. Buy the technology that resolves its nearest material or farming bottleneck before investing far ahead.
- Check the node’s prerequisites and mastery gate. An unlocked technology may not be enough to use a recipe if your Building or Anatomy mastery is too low.
- Check your point colors. Spend the red and green points you earn through routine work, and reserve scarce blue points for an anatomy need you can act on.
- Reassess after each unlock. The current beginner guide recommends following the next quest rather than buying technologies well in advance.
No consulted source establishes a universal speedrun-optimal order or a measured time saved by this route. The five picks are practical opening priorities supported by current beginner guidance, not a statistically proven best build.

What is confirmed about the game’s progression?
In its Steam announcements, developer Lazy Bear Games and publisher tinyBuild describe the game as retaining a familiar Technology Tree while adding a talent system. Their statement that the new system is designed to make progression more enjoyable is promotional language, not independent evidence that progression is easier or better balanced. PC Gamer Senior Editor Christopher Livingston described unlocking human-fat candles for church decoration in an account of his own early play.
