An olfactory illusion is a mismatch between an odor stimulus and the smell a person perceives. Odor mixtures can mask or change one another, and repeated exposure can make a persistent smell less noticeable. These ordinary perceptual effects are different from smell disorders such as parosmia and phantosmia.
What is an olfactory illusion?
Olfactory illusions are misleading smell perceptions: the experience does not map straightforwardly to the stimulus. In a 2011 review, Richard J. Stevenson described cases in which the same stimulus can lead to different percepts, or different stimuli can lead to the same percept. That does not mean a person is inventing a smell; it means perception is not a simple readout of what is in the air.
Smell is particularly difficult to verify from the outside. A person cannot readily compare their experience with another person’s, and the perceptual processes behind a smell are not usually accessible to conscious inspection. Stevenson’s review discusses why olfactory illusions may be overlooked.
How can an odor become misleading?
Odors can change one another in a mixture
Smells in everyday life usually come from mixtures of volatile compounds, not single isolated molecules. When odorants are combined, the result may not smell like a straightforward sum of the ingredients. NIST describes several effects that can occur when odorants are experienced together:
- Masking or suppression: one odorant reduces or overpowers the perceived effect of another.
- Conjugation: two odoriferous compounds together produce little or no perceived odor.
- Cross-adaptation: exposure to one odorant desensitizes the response to another.
These terms describe perceptual effects, not proof that a particular compound has disappeared. NIST’s review examines how one odor can affect the perception of another.

The brain’s and nose’s responses to mixtures are not simple addition
In research reported by the National Institutes of Health in 2020, scientists measured responses in mouse olfactory sensory neurons. In mixtures, one odor could alter a cell’s response to another odor, including when the first odor did not activate that cell on its own. The measured response pattern was not simply the sum of responses to the individual odors. This was a mouse sensory-cell experiment, not direct proof that human perception works identically.
Elizabeth Hillman, a Columbia University researcher cited in the NIH report, said: “Our results showed that scent molecules can mask other scents, not by overpowering them, but by changing the way cells respond to them.” The NIH summary explains the experiment and its findings.

A familiar background smell can fade from awareness
People may stop noticing a persistent odor after being around it for a while. A review of human odor responses distinguishes habituation—a decreased behavioral response following repeated exposure—from adaptation, the neural processes that contribute to that decrease. The terms are related but not interchangeable. The review does not establish one cause or a fixed duration for every instance of a smell becoming less noticeable. How are illusions different from smell disorders?
An ordinary change in how an odor is perceived is not, by itself, a diagnosis. Clinical terms describe specific patterns of altered smell:

A systematic review also describes smell failure as involving reduced intensity or changes in odor quality, and notes that central causes of olfactory distortions can include epilepsy and migraine. These are clinical associations, not a way to diagnose a cause from a smell experience. The systematic review of distorted olfactory perception covers these distinctions. Noticing a change does not establish which chemical is present, whether an exposure is safe, or whether the odorant’s concentration has decreased. Perceived masking and odor fade are distinct: an odor becoming less noticeable does not itself show that less odorant is in the air. The smell may be less perceptible because of a mixture effect or repeated exposure, among other possibilities.

There is no universal home test for an olfactory illusion in the sources cited here. Consider the basic distinctions instead: whether an odor source is present, whether the change concerns intensity or quality, and whether it follows exposure to a mixture or repeated exposure. Persistent distorted or absent smell is a different question from an odor that is merely harder to notice in a particular setting.
