Instagram Instants are casual photos shared through Direct Messages that disappear after recipients view them. You choose who can see each one: people on your Close Friends list or followers you follow back. Meta says an Instant is visible only to the audience you select.
What are Instagram Instants?
Meta describes Instants as a way to share everyday, in-the-moment photos with friends. You can add text, but you cannot edit an Instant. Recipients can react or reply, and the photo disappears after they view it.
Instants are accessed from Instagram’s Direct Messages area. Meta announced the feature in May 2026. Meta’s announcement is in Portuguese; it says the feature is globally available, while the separate Instants app is available in some countries. Availability can vary or change, so check Instagram in your region.

Before sharing, you select one of two audiences:
- Close Friends: people on your Close Friends list.
- Followers you also follow: people who follow you and whom you follow back—your mutual followers.
Meta says only the people you select can see the Instant. The announcement does not describe Instants as public posts.

What privacy controls and teen safeguards apply?
Meta says Instagram’s existing privacy and safety protections apply. You can use block, mute, and restrict controls to limit Instants from specific people.
Meta also says Instants integrates with Teen Accounts and existing parental supervision. Its announcement names a shared daily time limit, default restricted access, quiet hours that silence notifications from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and safety tools and reporting. These details reflect Meta’s May 2026 announcement.
Audience selection and disappearing content do not guarantee confidentiality. Meta’s announcement does not establish that recipients cannot preserve or capture what they see by other means.
Can you see who viewed your Instagram Instant?
Meta’s announcement does not say whether the sender can see a named list of people who opened an Instant. It also does not establish whether a view count is shown, or whether neither is available. The announcement is not enough to make a definitive claim about viewer-list details.
